Sounds like something else is interferring with the mount process re. the 20 minutes. Try connecting your ipod before opening Songbird and see if this is better. (e.g. my Ubuntu is set to auto open rhythmbox)
With regards to the ipod add-on it's pretty flawed to be frank - see my own bug on the ipod page. Basically, stay clear of synching playlists.
I'd say enjoy Songbird as player but use something like different, like rhythmbox purely for purposes of syncing.
One day they will realize this needs sorting and stop mucking about with their equalisers and their 'awesome bars'. Harsh but true!

Guy asked a question in Songbird on June 25, 2009 20:35:
bugzilla 15513/ Playlists leave song duplicates on IpodI have the same problem as defined on bugzilla 15513, I know this from another post.
How do I get into 'bugzilla' and how do I get notified on progress of this bug.
More generally when is songbird going to take hold of the ipod add-on and get it working properly?
I know Apples code protection is the stumbling block and there must be uncertainty regarding playlist handling in particular as it is conspicuously absent in other media players like Rhythmbox.
Your product is excellent in your roadmap you concentrate on, frankly, largely pointless features like the (basic) equaliser in Isan.
You want Songbird in the main repos for Ubuntu but Canonical aren't going to include something that has serious problems with commonly used features like ipod support.
In short, and IMHO external device support, including ipods should be concentrated on as part of the main project and not left on the sideline.
Best Regards, and hopefully some answers for this novice regarding bugzilla!-
