The SLR-ZOOM platform is about 1.65 inches in diameter.
While you might be able to get away with your current ballhead, it's can't hurt to get a smaller one. A larger ballhead could put the camera further away from the base of the tripod, thus increasing the torque on the Gorillapod in certain situations (like when wrapped around a vertical pole). By contrast, a lighter ballhead will lend the Gorillapod additional stability.
Happy shooting!

My Canon 40D with a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens is right at 4lbs, so I have a little wiggle room as far as the ballhead is concerned. I may go ahead and get a slightly smaller ballhead as my current one (Giottos MH-7001) is pretty hefty, but probably still within the 6.6lbs rating. Thanks for the info!
Out of curiosity, do you know how wide the mounting base of the ZOOM is?

The short answer is there's no hard and fast rule as to what size ballhead we recommend. If your ballhead fits on top of the Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM base, and if you can use it to your own satisfaction, then it's the right size!
The slightly more complicated answer is that while a 2.5-inch diameter ballhead will certainly fit on the SLR-ZOOM platform, something of that size will no doubt add considerably more weight, which in turn reduces the amount of camera weight you can use with the Gorillapod (the SLR-ZOOM is rated to hold 3kg or 6.6 lbs).
While I have not tested such a setup myself, it stands to reason that the platform of the Gorillapod should be able to support your ballhead without difficulty. The only remaining question then is how heavy your camera is.
Hope that helps!

What size ballhead will fit on the SLR ZOOM?I am going to buy a SLR ZOOM, but am curious as to what size ballhead is best? It looks like the base where the ballhead mounts is about 1.25" across and my existing ballhead from my tripod is about 2.5" across. Is this too big of a ballhead or do I need to find a ballhead with a base diameter around the same or less as the Gorillapod's base?
