Malte S. Stretz replied on March 22, 2009 17:33 to the idea "Canonical URLs" in Soup:
Yes, I think /post/$id/ should be the canonical, but doesn't really matter.
About linkage with different string: I myself link to soup posts often with a modified or no string at all (ie. only the id) because in some cases it spoils the surprise and in others it is randomly cut off or just "Image". But I guess I'm sometimes kind of a URL-fetishist ;)

Filtering Soups by date *after*Inspired by http://kitchen.soup.io/post/15855753/... I had the following idea: I regularly visit http://www.soup.io/friends when I'm sitting in the lab and am frustrated about my soldering fu or at work and wait for the latest updates to download. Sometimes (if the downloads take really long) I refresh quite a bit and reloading all the page can take a while.
So I'd like to restrict the amount of stuff I see because I already know the old stuff and often the pipe I sit behind is quite small and loading all those YouTube previews takes ages and steals precious bandwidth.
I propose an additional URL parameter called after= or since= (and maybe make date= a synonym for before=). Both should take a flexible date string, eg:
http://www.soup.io/friends?since=yest...
http://www.soup.io/friends?since=1+hour
http://www.soup.io/friends?since=1h
http://www.soup.io/friends?since=2%20...
http://www.soup.io/friends?since=2d
http://www.soup.io/friends?since=2008...
http://www.soup.io/friends?since=2008-12
http://www.soup.io/friends?since=200812 (yes, this doesn't work currently, needs a dash)
http://www.soup.io/friends?since=2 (not sure which default time unit this should be, either days or hours I guess)

Ah, now I get what you want. So you more or less want to specify the alt attribute of the picture (which should be used as the default title) without the text appearing below the picture :) – Malte S. Stretz, on March 20, 2009 12:10

Canonical URLsAs the part after the /post/ is a freeform string, until (and after) you implement
http://getsatisfaction.com/soup/topic...
could you please add a
<link rel="canonical" />
to the posts? See http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/canonic... in case you missed the discussion last month :)-

There's already some previous discussion of this topic (see http://getsatisfaction.com/soup/tags/...) but I like your suggestion best: Reserve /post/ and maybe something special like /-/ but let me override/permalink all other paths on my soup.
I suggest the additional /-/ (or whatever you like) so we can still use the special links like
http://kitchen.soup.io/-/friends
http://kitchen.soup.io/-/login
Could also become a reserved prefix like the plus on launchpad:
http://kitchen.soup.io/+friends
http://kitchen.soup.io/+login
It just should be short.

Malte S. Stretz reported a problem in Soup on July 29, 2008 17:16:
Reposting stuff from RSS feeds is handled suboptimalIf you repost something somebody else imported from an RSS feed, the result is suboptimal:
* The post will still have the original favicon instead of the generic text/quote one.
* The post icon will link to the original website instead of the post, making it very hard to get the link.
* The favicon will be hotlinked from the original website: they pay with their traffic for a possibility to track me.
That's especially weird in case you create a reaction which doesn't have much in common with the original post, like this one.

Not exactly a shortener, but I use decenturl.com a lot. Would hate if those URLs got replaced by the originals though because its more kinda permalink service.
There's a list at http://notlong.com/links/ -- but apart from tinyurl and snipurl I didn't know any of those actually ;~) Love the bit.ly domain, guess I'll use that one in future as well.

Malte S. Stretz replied on July 16, 2008 16:15 to the problem "/friends not hideable" in Soup:
Definitely makes more sense.
But what about adding another option "friends feed" to disable /friends? maybe I don't like to have the friend list because of design reasons around but like to see their feed without logging in (as described above). Hmm... of course I could hack the css to display:none the friend list then.
Malte S. Stretz replied on July 16, 2008 15:05 to the problem "/friends not hideable" in Soup:
plz undo this, this sucks. I have the friends tab hidden on my soup but use /friends myself often on the road/at work to see what they posted without having to log in. Please let me have /friends even without the tab on my page.
Actually... seems like I don't have the friends tab disabled but /friends redirects to / anyway (custom domain)... check out http://soup.hacksause.de/friends
