A comment on the idea "Remember playback position & Skip when shuffling" in Songbird:
Ok, cool, I didn't know there was an addon for this.
I don't know if I understand what you mean. Songbird already can sync songs with an iPod, so what I'm asking is, can it also sync info like "Skip when Shuffling" or "Remember position"? I don't entirely know much about it, but couldn't it almost just be an XML file or something on the iPod? Couldn't an addon just edit it the field when syncing?
I may be wrong, but it seems just like a field like "Album artist", so would that be very hard for Songbird to do?
Thanks. – he who eats pie, on May 26, 2009 07:12

I was just about to suggest this.
As much as I love my bookmark toolbar, it's not something I'm entirely longing for in Songbird. But I do definitely think that someone should make an addon to show "Bookmarks" up top in the menu, like FF. I would totally make an addon myself, but I'm a newb to XUL, Javascript, and programming in general.
I think it would be a very excellent addon to contribute.
(Peter Rosel, is that Songbird, or Firefox?)-

Remember playback position & Skip when shufflingHow hard would it be to add "Remember position" and "Skip when shuffling" functionality to Songbird, specifically for iPod? It doesn't seem like it would be extremely hard, especially as an addon. I do know there is a "skip when shuffling" addon out there, but I'm asking this primarily for my iPod, and I don't think the addon supports iPod use. As far as I can tell, there is not a "Remember position" addon at all, besides one that continues the song that was being played when Songbird was last shut down.
To be honest, I think it's kind of a very important feature, especially when migrating from iTunes (which, quite honestly, many people are). This means that if I were to switch from iTunes to Songbird to manage my Pod, I need it to have both of these features, and it would be nice if they could be imported when I import my library, so I don't have to go through every song and manually switch those features. In this sense, it seems like it needs to be a core feature instead of an addon.

To be completely honest, I was really disappointed when I first saw that they changed the icon, because for all the beta releases, it was just an egg with a crack in it, and I thought "I bet for 1.0 they're going to finally have the little black bird come out of its shell." Even though I'd seen the bird before, It was just kinda the big letdown for me (that and the lack of CD ripping...but that's on the way). It was the thing I was looking forward to most for the stable release (it may sound silly, I know).
I guess the thing that annoys me most is not the change of color, just how the bird is angled. It almost looks like the Songbird is flat, at least in the image that Michael originally posted. It just looks unnatural to me. Even one like icebearhugo posted would be better, in my opinion.
I dunno. I really liked the blackbird. It always made me laugh, to see all the little air puffs coming out of who knows where and such. I know I tend to prefer darker skins (er...feathers), but I just find the black bird so much better. But that's just my opinion.
I think that, if the developers really want to go with orangy (which I honestly hope they don't), they should at least get around to changing everything, cause it's pretty darn confusing to have all these black birds on the website, and then you download Songbird, and it's orange.
(Also, I know this thread is kinda dated, as we're already on to 1.1, but I thought I'd still voice my opinion, since the last post was only 6 days ago.)

That's kinda vague, dude. I mean, I haven't used it much, but it seems like a pretty handy tool. It does indeed work with missing files (ghosts), even though I haven't tried to remove any of them.
Maybe you should be less vague and say "It's unreliable because I tried this and then it does this," rather than just complaining "It sucks, Songbird sucks," etc.
A comment on the problem "Songbird will not play cd's" in Songbird:
Ed, I have one word for you: BETA. Songbird is in Beta. They don't even suggest it for everyday use. Plus, a media player plays media. It doesn't have to have CD playback. But Songbird will, eventually. Give it time. At least its first official release.
No, I sincerely doubt that DVDs come after CDs and MP3s. MP3s, or at least digital music files, are the future. When you think about how many people buy CDs compared to the number of people who solely buy songs off iTunes or Amazon, or what have you, its astounding. To go back to a physical device (at least that is available now) would be like taking a step backward. Maybe they'll come out with something different, like very tiny flash drives, or some other digital media, but DVDs? Come now. Besides, really the only plus to DVDs over CDs is extra strorage space. And what CD would occupy gigs of memory? Even if you had very high quality music.
So in conclusion, give songbird a break, its still in Beta, so don't go saying "media player can say they are a media player without being able to play CD's first," because something that plays CDs and not MP3s is not a media player, it's a CD PLAYER. – he who eats pie, on December 06, 2008 03:19-
