You should register the MAC address for the wireless device. In your case the AirPort (I assume your cable modem doesn't have wireless capabilities).

If that doesn't work, please state which wireless router you have. Or upgrade to Leopard ;-)

If someone stands nearby your house and wants to know the current location then your access point would help.

I fail to see any privacy concerns. I just added my own private access point.

(Not that it's a valid question, of course. E.g. if selling the device, thereby moving it to an unknown location)

I think that's a bad idea as the location of your iPhone isn't static. The whole point is to link a MAC address to an exact, non-moving location...

For those running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, just Option-click the AirPort symbol in the menu bar. The MAC address will appear right beneath the name of your wireless network (like 12:34:56:78:9a:bc).
