I am inclined to think that the design of the Music Management feature is a little confusing. My previous player, Quintessential, had a similar feature that allowed you relocate files, however it was 'on-demand' function which ran once upon request, rather than as a passive, background function as with Songbird. Although the version of Quintessential I used didn't have a music library so I guess it didn't make sense for it to work like Songbird.

One criticism I would make is that, it wasn't exactly clear that at which point it would it would start relocating files. As soon as I click the Turn Managed Mode On?, as soon as I click Ok or at some other point?

I have a suggestion: perhaps rather than something that you turn on and off, have a button labelled Run once now and an additional check box labelled Run every time library is modified.

Sondbird has a new feature called 'Manage Music' that will rearrange your music collection. When I upgraded it was off by default so I'm surprised it bit you like that.

I recreated by profile and this issue is no longer occurring. Unfortunately, I've lost my copy of the old profile so I can't do any more testing of this.

If my above comment is true, then it may be quicker to paste a search term into the field. You will of course have to find a different field to type in your search field and copy from first.

This occurred to me when I quite naturally used the in-line track editing feature to copy the name of the artist currently playing track and paste it into the search field. The search did seem to complete at lost faster than normal! – IAmAI, on June 09, 2009 13:56

I have a question: when typing a search query, is it initiating a new search each time a new character is typed in the search field? I'd image it would be more efficient to wait a moment to ensure the user has finished typing their search query before initiating a search or have a button the user must click first.

It may not be crashing - just taking a long time. I've tried searching on a library with nearly 70,000 songs. It took a while but eventually it finished.
