Yes it's available via the twitter API, but it's up to the client you're using to support it. I don't use twitterfox so I couldn't tell you whether it does or not.

There are usually "in reply to [username]" links at the bottom of @reply posts when you view them on the web. Assuming the user making the @reply post set it up correctly.

Facebook doesn't allow API access to email addresses so it would be impossible to match anybody up between FB and twitter.

You can only send direct messages to people who follow you. If the link is not available on a person's profile it means they don't follow you.

If you REALLY need this, sign up at twittermail.com and use an IMAP-capable mail service like Gmail. No need for twitter to reinvent the wheel, and you can use your mail clients to catch up on tweets.

I don't see a need to complicate every twitter client and twitter itself with read/unread statuses.

It's been OVER 4 MONTHS. Even if IM is such a complex issue that it can't be solved and brought back up in 4 months, users should at least get an explanation of what's going on from Jack et al. And NO, the "Offline. Working on additional capacity" line on status.twitter.com is not communication.

What gives? There seems to be enough time to work on the election coverage, new layouts, etc. Why is IM being treated like a red-headed stepchild?

Set up your phone in the Devices page. If you start getting updates after that, text "OFF" once to stop updates, and "OFF" again if you want to stop direct messages as well. From then on you can send updates to 40404 but you won't get any updates unless you send "ON" again.
