My guess then would be a network issue with 'Mashtape', when Songbird is trying to access all that info for the new track.
I would try removing 'ALL' the addons and try again, if that works re add them one at a time and see if something in particular is causing the issue.

I'm a new Songbird user so only guessing, trying to help. But Songbird on my system is rock stable. Vista 64 4gb Ram, Quad Intel Thingy @ 3ghz; inc 'Mashtape' and other 'pretty pretty addons' about 4.5K tracks.
Oh and an ADSL @ 1.5mb speed.

Firefox has an extension 'New Tab Homepage' and IE can be configured to always open page of choice in a new tab.
Is there something similar in Songbird that I have overlooked? or an extension.

Give information about your computer setup, OS RAM CPU, position of your Library and/or music files folder, have you imported from the Music Files storage folder, or iTunes Library DB etc
Give a bit more info and they may be able to help you.

Getting the feeling SongBird is quite Linux centric, don't appear many users on Windows Vista. Sorry I couldn't help, tried to make my comp react the same but no joy.
Good luck anyway in finding the cause. Maybe in the Events Log you may find something listed giving some clue..

How could not having a software EQ in a computer media player stop you from using the said media player. I was under the understanding that the sound balance on music we all enjoy was carried out in the recording studio.

I remember reading that audiophiles do not use sound equalizing as they leave this job up to the professional sound engineer, and just use a 'Flat' setting and enjoy the music as it was intended.
That said, SongBird gives me musical reproduction equal to Foobar2000 iTunes and Windows MP, the limitation for me is not listening on a dedicated HiFi system but on my humble PC.

It seems to me that adding more and more to a software Media Player in terms of functionality is eventually going to bloat the app, when core functions should be the priority. But then maybe this EQ thing is a core function? Oh well
