A comment on the problem "Unrequested deletion of direct messages" in Twitter:
@mdy - thx for testing this and report the behavior, surprising how this (the part about me deleting and the originator's dm also gone) works, but oh well. – ThomasHan, on April 13, 2008 20:45

It turns out that if we delete a direct message that we've sent, it also disappears from the recipient's "dm inbox".
Similarly, if a user deletes a direct msg that they've received, it also disappears from the sender's direct message "sent dm's"
If you or your friend have a habit of cleaning out your "sent dms" and/or "dm inbox," then you'll both inadvertently be deleting the direct msgs from each other's accounts.
There might be other explanations (perhaps there's a bug), but this is the first one that comes to mind.
