Hi again Innovator,
I just heard back from Ramit and his feeling is that it's fine for you to advertise in a free wiki.
We don't have any examples for you, but I'm sure that there are plenty of advertising options out there. If you come up with a specific type of advertising that you are having problems with, let us all know here.
It's likely you'll get a few good ideas on how to solve any problems.

With PBwiki 2.0 and page- and/or folder-based access controls, you could just handle this manually. Sponsor gives you a certain amount of money (say through PayPal), you give them access to a folder or page on the wiki, and they can do anything they want with it. So I think the technology is there...I think the hard part will be building up a community around the wiki such that a sponsor would find it worth their money.

Pbwiki trialed some functionality that would allow you to charge for access. This was some time ago and they scrapped apparently due to a lack of interest. Might be worth contacting them directly to see if they could turn it on for you?? – Seanmac, on May 20, 2008 12:36

OK, but say I do this as a "business" how would I set it up.
Is there functionality there to enable me to do this or would I need to do some custom development.
How easy is it to do?
Do you have any examples from the business sector that you could point me at?
Thanks – Innovator, on May 20, 2008 08:38

Hi Innovator,
If you have a free wiki you may have a problem doing that.
Don't accept this as the last word (official response). I'll check but here's how it looks to me.
Accepting donations is ok, but if you use advertising to raise money, you may have to register as a Business wiki. Our terms of service are simple but pretty clear.

You agree that you may use the free version of the pbwiki Service only for non-commercial purposes.
Once you place advertisements, you could be considered "commercial".
Innovator asked a question in PBwiki on May 19, 2008 15:50:
Can you raise revenue with PBwiki? Can you recover costs or raise revenue with PBwiki?
I am working in the voluntary sector investigating the use of PBwiki to develop a collaborative space for people to share journeys tips and take advantage of free concessionary travel
Due to the potentially large numbers of users there will be some cost to set this up.
I am wondering whether it is possible to offset these costs by earning revenue either through advertising or by charging sponsers to have a page of their own on the space.
Anyone done this before?
Any other thoughts or ideas welcome.
