We would love to support the entire world via SMS, unfortunately its not that simple. I assure you we are working on SMS support outside the US.

In the meantime you can use Brightkite over mobile email. Put the standard SMS commands into the body of the message. Send it to your Brightkite email account. Its not ideal but seems to be working well for users outside the US. This link has more information:

@lantrix: I think it's necessary for the world to be country-centric, but it is ludicrous that the internet (or more specifically, websites and web services) are country-centric (localisation aside of course). :)

Not sure if Shelfari even has an API (.NET all the way), but it'd be neat to have integration if it did, as it's a nice site.

A UK number would be sweet. Twitter use a UK number for most countries.
If BK are looking for a gateway, I'd recommend txtlocal. Incoming SMS is free on a shared number, or £35 a month on a dedicated number. Outgoing SMS is fairly cheap as well (depending on how many you purchase).

I'm with Vodafone AU because data usage costs are acceptable - but trying to use MMS with brightkite? A waste of time. A real sms number would be great. Why is the world so country centric?

A rest-of-the-world SMS number is definitely needed. With you using a US shortcode there's no way anyone outside N America can update via text, which not only limits your userbase but just kinda looks like you're neglecting everyone else.

We can only be as accurate as the geocoded address that is in our database. Always try to be as specific as possible at street level.

If this is not specific enough you can check in at a latitude, longitude. If you go there often you can then save it as a placemark. In the future you will be able to edit inaccurate information.
