Whatever you put there. It's just that a lot of us prefer not to use it. For me, it takes so long to go through the nested folders that I organize the the bookmarks into. Much quicker is to simply start typing into the address field or option-command-B and do a quick search.
I put my most used bookmarks in the bookmark bar.

I think I'm being pretty clear about what's not synched:
Nothing in the Bookmarks section of the left pane of the main bookmarks window in Safari.
"Top level" implies a nested folder structure, and that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. Safari just has a whole set of bookmarks which apparently have no obvious parallel in FireFox and so are not synched.
See the image I've attached, in which I've put a big red X over the unsynched part.

Steve,
Yes, that's right. XMarks syncs the menu and the toolbar, but not the other bookmarks, which don't show up in the Safari menu. This is because FireFox doesn't have another place to store bookmarks. Like Safari, FireFox shows the toolbar bookmarks in its menu.
Note that Safari also includes AddressBook URLs in its menu and FireFox doesn't. Those don't need to be synched by XMarks (I use Plaxo personally).

XMarks keeps throwing up a dialogue box on Mac OS X.WIth XMarks, I now get dialogue boxes asking me how I want the sync to be performed. Why isn't this a preference I don't have to worry about except when I want to?

A great big "me too" here on this. I have too many bookmarks to make navigating in a menu them practical, so I use the menubar for my favorites and ones that affect the current page (mainly short javascripts that do things like share it on facebook) and then I click on the open-book icon in the bar if I need to find one.
Most often auto-complete finds the bookmark I want while I'm typing.
I have about 10 bookmarks in the menu, mainly from before I figured out a better system.
So what happens with syncs? Does FoxMenu just leave those bookmarks alone or do they disappear?
(BTW, mimicking this Safari method of using bookmarks would make a great FireFox plugin, huh?)

How do I file a ticket?A bug report or RFE?

Can't type regular text right after link.Typing in text right after a linked bit of text results in the new text being part of the link. It's possible of course to edit the source and fix that, but it's a bit frustrating if you like to put your links in right away, or if you decide to go back and change the text at the end of a section.
