A comment on the question "Can I use RescueTime to record non-computer tasks?" in RescueTime:
That's great. When you get the source code cleaned up can you make it available? Thanks – Darren, on October 09, 2008 20:24

Has anybody tried ManicTime? I had the same problem, not much at the computer and I wanted to track idle time so I can see how long a meeting took.
After trying everything out there, and I mean everything i found ManicTime. I have been using it for a couple of months now and it works great. It tracks the applications you use and your idle time.
But I think it is windows only.

A comment on the question "Getting Photosynth updates" in Live Labs:
That's quite inspired actually Nathanael, thanks for pointing it out. I've got it updated now independently, but if it has problems doing it automatically in future (and assuming I can get that level of browser settings access - I'm surprised it even runs here, my excuse is it might actually be potentially useful for my job) I'll give that a try.
It's a strange catch 22 that if there's a bug in v ....6 that prevents it from auto-updating, then no new version you release with that bug fixed will automatically clear the problem anyway - they'll all need a manual update. But previous auto-updating versions will presumably have updated through to ....6 for any user that logs on regularly enough to not have skipped that release. Headache time! – tahrey, on October 08, 2008 09:37
A comment on the question "Getting Photosynth updates" in Live Labs:
Tahrey, I'm not speaking against your point, but you could simply temporarily disable the photosynth browser plugin and you would be sent to the download page straight away which would get you the latest version right off. I am puzzled as to why v.06 isn't auto updating and would love to know the answer, though. – Nathanael Lawrence, on October 07, 2008 19:08
A comment on the problem "Failed (Error A000000B)" in Live Labs:
i'm having trouble understanding that, Xan, but I would caution that an hour is not always the best cut-off point. if you have a lot of large photos and a slow connection, it might genuinely need more than an hour to send (and certainly more than that to process on a less-than-hardcore cpu).
e.g. 100mb of images would just about max out a 256kbit upload allowance for that 60 minute period (and remember uploads generally go at a max of between 1/2 and 1/8 the rated download speed depending on your isp - so potentially as low as 128kbit on a 1mbit download line)
also the available speed can vary due to all manner of conditions so stopping and starting over can seem to "clear" it when it would have got faster anyway. bit of a false economy if you have to do all the processing again. – tahrey, on October 06, 2008 20:35
A comment on the idea "Keyboard commands - hidden features!" in Live Labs:
Gah, the layout of them is starting to become a bit annoying now - is there any way to move the "right hand" group to the left a bit so one doesn't end up accidentally hitting "P" or " ' " or "," or "." all the damn time when trying to use the rather spread out L-;-#-[ set that surrounds them. (I'm thinking there is maybe a disconnect between the keys I have there and the US ones, but the positions are probably the same; L for Pan Left, ; for Pan Down, then the next one to the right for "switch between 2D and 3D", then the furthest right for Pan Right, and the rest as you expect them. Also a switching of the fullscreen key (F) to some other appropriate letter (not necessarily the capital!) to similarly separate it a little further from the WASDEC group? Spacebar, even :)
I'm trying to whiz around a nice pointcloud and continually zipping to the thumbnail view or accidentally skipping back & forth thru the pic sequence which sometimes means ending up in a different group... :) Of course, the window/fullscreen switch isn't as disruptive, – tahrey, on October 06, 2008 13:51

I'm trying to find the link to the update as well, now. It solved some problems on my home machine but I can't any longer remember which topic had the link posted in it. Would it be possible just to put a small link on the PS homepage or something, please? I know it's in this forum somewhere but it's going to take a while to find - and I already tried searching for "update" and this is where it dropped me!
tahrey replied on October 05, 2008 14:38 to the question "Does the size of the photo (megapixles) matter" in Live Labs:
Jon, Nate - yes, that one. Some of them do seem to load up OK if you leave them a while but others (e.g. as in my attachment) either never fully load, or are taking so damn long about it that no-one, even myself, will hang around long enough to allow them to do so. Also the initial load-up seems to take forever, enough so that I was motivated to comment on it in my synth description. Is it just overly complex and causing issues either on the server or the flash client? Or held on a server that's having load / connection issues that haven't yet been picked up on ..... or suffered untrapped processing / uploading difficulties that have caused this effect. (Possibly something to do with that unreadable info-page also winding up synthing to completely the wrong wall for reasons that can't easily be explained other than an all-out glitch - one that I think has also affected at least one of my other large synths in a couple of odd ways)
As before, I'm not hugely bothered by it as I largely achieved what I wanted to when embarking on the experiment, but if they are supposed to be loading up quickly into their full, 2 megapixel, medium-high ISO, slightly blurred glory, then it's definitely something that needs looking into!
Thanks...
(EDIT: ah... it's auto-reduced that ... if there's any way you can zoom into it, however, the effect should be plain... in fact i think it's slightly noticable even here - if only because of the rather stark jpg compression it's also added to the image. I measured it in Paint as displaying at 680x512 pixels or thereabouts (within the maximised 1024x768 window), and it's still distinctly blocky, so it may even be 320x240 rather than 400x300!)
PS that was after leaving it sit for a couple of minutes, when a couple other pictures in the set on the "walk" towards it appeared in much better definition after only ~10 seconds (still seeming a bit slow, but did get there) ... oddly my impression of the dark, translucent surrounding pics on some of the locations was that they were clearer than the one in the centre!
In fact, it still hadn't resolved after I'd saved that image and shut paint again.

OK, all updated, and it seems to be working beautifully now. At least for that one.... as i've now hit a 80004005 in a different synth. But at least the persistent a000000b's have gone, so many thanks :) – tahrey, on October 05, 2008 14:10

Another thing to note is that the list of keys for the right-hand side of the keyboard isn't entirely accurate .... at least not on my UK spec laptop, but I don't think the layout of those mentioned actually differs from the US definition (apart from the ' and " key being ' and @ instead, which I'm familiar with anyway). It doesn't take too long to figure out which is which with some exploratory pushing though.
But thanks for passing us the list!

Jonathan, I'm fairly certain it's this one. The first photo doesn't seem to do too badly, but the none of the shots of the courtyard or the photos on the wall seem to resolve fully. – Nathanael Lawrence, on October 02, 2008 23:41
A comment on the problem "Failed (Error A000000B)" in Live Labs:
ok maybe it's just a bit of a lag on the page or some kind of dumb Opera incompatibility (it's decided to make itself default browser for everything, even in situations where IE7 would actually be a better choice >_<) meaning the thing sends but it doesn't actually say that it has.
now i have to trust that the triplicated original comment that i've just told it to delete all three of (but it hasn't shown any response to) have actually been zapped. Keeping this version because I prefer it. Also I've just downloaded the update program and started installing it and it says version 2.0.1403.12?! I think it may be better if you just link to a set "upgrade" page in future (...which is where I'm now going to go - the straight <a href="http://www.photosynth.com" rel="nofollow">www.photosynth.com</a> "download" page) because the one you've given us there looks to be out of date already! :-D
^^^^ dunno what all the code is, I just typed the address in by itself and the page did all that without asking. Also that .12 update seems to have applied awful fast for an 8.2mb download, I wonder if it's actually succeeded?
(A: Yes it has, and it's now saying it's version .14 ... wish it'd make it's mind up :-D ... oooh look, i've now been given two seperate edit boxes with which to edit the one comment with. GetSatisfactions HTML wonders never cease!) – tahrey, on October 02, 2008 23:01

can you add the link to the synth you feel shows the images drastically below their uploaded resolution? I'd like to take a look.
