A comment on the idea "companies' information on homepage" in Get Satisfaction:
I agree that you shouldn't push it on the individual company page; people visiting that page either know the company or they want to get know the company so that it is worth the effort scrolling down.. the tagline would be for the lazy ones that just scroll down the companies page (or homepage) and when they are intrigued by the tagline they might click to get the extensive information.. – Jan, on June 23, 2008 21:21

Hi Jan! Thanks for the suggestions. I'm the one definitely pushing to keep the about information at the bottom of the page. I'm assuming that most people coming to a company page already know about the company. I'm also trying to keep in mind that some companies don't have a simple one line tag-line (although they should!). So I really like your idea of adding about information onto the Companies Page. I won't feel bad about limiting the character count, and the Companies Page is a great place to explore and learn about new companies. In fact, the tagline is probably interesting enough that we won't even need to hide it away. ;)
Right now I'm working on the individual Company home page, but I'll put this into some comps, and hopefully get some of this slatted for change in the near future.

Thanks! Those Vimeo videos are pretty cool. I'm also a big fan of Common Craft's videos: http://www.commoncraft.com/

I also really like the idea of the mouseover tagline on the home page. Thanks for the feedback, Jan. – Amy Muller, on June 20, 2008 16:41-

A comment on the idea "half star ratings?" in outbrain:
I understand... Well - I sure do hope you continue using outbrain for ratings&recommendations, but we do realize that our solution is not necessarily the perfect one for every case. I think there are rating widgets out there that may allow you to use a wider scale than 5.
For the majority of our blog readers, a 5-star scale is more than enough for the purpose of rating blog posts and we would not want to add further confusion or frusturation that comes with more options. – galai, on June 20, 2008 15:12

Yes - we normalize the ratings both on a site level and on a user level. – galai, on June 20, 2008 15:09

video tutorials, or just simple introductions?
I would split it up; first show them some cool text and image based stuff (in the style of the website itself, and actually integrated on the homepage), and supply them at the same time with a link to the FAQ and a video tutorial.
elements of inspiration:
my all time favourite sec but not too sec site: http://www.keytradebank.com/
it perfectly uses that bannerspace; perhaps you could replace that center black text logo for all people that aren't logged in yet and make it less high (like how it is now) when they are..
the way I would fill that banner space is like the image at the bottom of http://www.vimeo.com/
or something -> with -> arrows
and instead of using the 3 numbers at the right bottom as tab-switches, you can use the 4 key elements of GS at the right top. + start with the standard page; when people click or go over the 4 elements the content changes..
great video tutorials: http://www.vimeo.com/help (what else did you expect from an arty farty video sharing site :)

and no, I didn't know any of these 3 companies (although feedly ringed a bell), so yes, it would be a miracle if one of my guesses was right.. certainly the first.. :) – Jan, on June 20, 2008 08:04

My guess is that you didn't see the about section because it was at the bottom of the page! No? I fear it may be a bit too buried. – Eric Suesz, on June 20, 2008 07:54

I hadn't seen the about-section yet (and only noticed the links implicitely). but perhaps once I would have seen them I would have paid more attention to them for other company pages. :) – Jan, on June 20, 2008 07:50

Great idea. This is one that we've considered. There's also some discussion about where that company information should be. Some of us here want it down at the bottom, some want it up at the top. We've tried it a few different ways.
I love the idea of taglines. I'm a fan of taglines.
What companies can do is add to or change that text that describes their company, so they do have options to include that type of information. The companies that participate can come in and make it a little more personal, for sure. Those that don't participate probably get stuck with more generic copy.
If you're on a company's home page, you should be able to see what the company does. For example, here, toward the bottom of the profile:
