Hi Melissa,
The option to allow users to request access to your wiki is in the Settings section. Click on Settings in the upper right of your screen, then go to the Wiki Security panel under Access Controls, click the checkbox next to "Let people request access to view or edit the wiki.", and click the Save button. Users will then see a button to request access to your wiki when they go to it and don't have access.

Hi, I'm not sure that we have any good methods of supporting this currently, but I'm interested in understanding your need better: Are you interested in rating the contributors, rating individual contributions that everyone can see, or setting up an approval system for page edits before Reader users can see them?

Hi, Val. This is a top priority for us, but I can't say it'll be ready by the end of July. We're working around a Fall start to the school year. If you need to set a wiki up for your students by end of July, I'd suggest sticking to a 1.0 wiki. – Janet Yu, on July 22, 2008 19:47

No, the new features will only affect 2.0 wikis. – Janet Yu, on July 18, 2008 20:45

Hi Rob, We wanted to consolidate the way people logged into PBwiki when we moved to 2.0 since there was a lot of confusion with 1.0. User accounts also allow for better traceability.
That being said, we also want PBwiki user accounts to be as easy to use as possible. We've tried to make the signup process very simple, and we recently added the Request Access feature so admins don't have to do all the upfront work of adding users to their wikis. We're also working on some other features to make it easier to get users onto your wiki. These'll be coming down the pipe in the next few months.

We totally understand your pain. In fact, we're working on the next version of our Settings panel right now, which includes exactly this change and the ability to add multiple users at a time.
Note that on 2.0 wikis, you can add new writers in the "Share this wiki" block on the side panel.
Thanks for the feedback and keep us posted with other ways we can make PBwiki work better for you!

We know our primary school teachers are really left out of PBwiki 2.0 since many of their students don't have email accounts. We're working on a feature that addresses this by allowing teachers to easily generate "classroom accounts" that don't require email accounts. We hope this will allow more of you to try out the great new features in PBwiki 2.0!
We also understand that teachers need to make their plans before the school year starts, so we're aiming to roll this feature out well in advance of the coming school year.-
