I had a similar experience last night (and this morning), though things SEEM to be ok again now.
I say this tentatively, because some people are still reporting that their tweets are disappearing. So apparently the issue isn't completely fixed yet.

Yesterday (Sunday, July 20. 2008) All my new tweets would disappear. They'd show up initially but would vanish awhile later when I re-loaded the page. Same thing happened with the Twitter widget on my blog. The new tweets would show up at first, but would disappear later.

Today, the missing tweets have been restored, and it seems to be working properly again. At least for now.

I've tested it by posting a new tweet, and so far so good.
It's been there for about an hour, and hasn't vanished yet. :)

I've noticed this as well; once my Tweets reach a certain age, they're removed from the system.
I figured it was because Twitter considered old tweets obsolete after awhile, and deleted them to save space.

Your Twitter updates are generally read only by the people who "follow" you.
There IS a tab on everyone's home page that says "Everyone", where you can check out the most recent Twits that have been posted across the globe, by anyone and everyone. It gets updated really fast, though, since people are twitting like mad. :)
To my knowledge, there's no way to do a "public address" kind of thing where your Twit would appear in everyone's follow-stream.
It would be too close to spamming, I think... not sure Twitter would allow something like that.

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong....

The same thing is happening to me.
Everything from Sunday and beyond keeps disappearing.
When I try updating, it shows up initially, but disappears a few minutes later.
I re-load the page, hoping everything will be there, but it's simply gone.
The same thing is happening with the twitter widget on my blog. The updates show up initially, but disappear awhile later.
Very frustrating.

At least four tweets have gone missing in the past 12 hours.
