As a work around you can store your ratings in another field. Some use the grouping field, I actually use disc number as I do not care for this information and I using grouping for key info. So here is how to do it... Create several smart playlists i.e. rating is 1 star, rating is 2 stars, rating is 3 stars, etc...

Then select all in a playlist and assign a number to your desired field 1-5. I find it handy in the disc number field I can say a song is Disc 3 of 5 which to me means 3 1/2 stars

Also you can enter 0 in grouping or I use 101 in Disc number, which I then create a playlist; Disc Number is 101 and rating is greater than 0 stars. This playlist tells me which tracks I have rated but not stored the info in a more permanent tag.

For the last tip to work best you would need to apply 0 or 101 or whatever to the tag for ALL the songs in your library that are not rated. Essentially clearing that field of whatever data it previously had... Technically you could put this in your comment field as well with an apple script or similar so as to not remove any previous comments but still have the info available for smart playlists.
