Popeye marked one of Jason Wilson's replies in Platial as useful. Jason Wilson replied to the question "Changing Locations on Itouch".

Wrong Location? There is a way to update the skyhook wireless location database (to solve issues where the iPhone, or iPod Touch thinks you are in the location of a previous residence of office).

Hi Popeye, and anyone else with similar issue,
the problem sounds like it's tied to your router. The location awareness is based (in part) on the wifi networks your device can see around you, this wifi node info is looked up in a database of known locations/lat,longs. The db belongs to skyhook wireless. They get some info from driving around with trucks capturing the locations of wifi nodes. In this case, they may have captured the location of your wifi router when it was at the old location. Fortunately they have a page where you can update their old, or wrong, data. That link is http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitw...

Coming soonDevelopment is underway, finalizing assets and creative, working on a QA plan, then the submission happens! I have already been spending HOURS staring at the content, it's sooo great, so much fun. Can't wait to really have this out and about on the streets.

Great to hear that! Guess that will not be added before I leave for Amsterdam next week? ;-)
In Maps the addresses from the address book are available, and those addresses are what I would expect to be able to use directly in Nearby. Would that be in line with your ideas of this feature? I mean that the address is used directly to place the pin, instead of a cryptic global position text string added to the notes field of the address book entry.
That would mean group support from Address Book would be great too. For example, I have a group now for Amsterdam (as I am going there next weekend). Then if I in Nearby could access that entire group, check off all the different addresses I am currently interested in, and have them ALL be viewable as pins within Nearby - then that would be fantastic (strange Apple did not add this to the Maps app)!
All those location could then be saved to "My Places" or a new collection (the user would be prompted to enter a name for the collection), directly from that address book view. That way I could press a "deselect all" button, and select new entries for another set that I also save as a new collection (with a different name). I could then keep doing this until I have all the collections from my address book neatly added to Nearby, ready for use.
Save to address book is also cool, but only if the user gets the option to add to existing or create a new address book entry. Without that it would, in my opinion, be almost pointless. And the added info should be the street address, if possible :-) – Pandemic, on October 03, 2008 12:26

Hi Pan, the local manipulation of data from one app to another is a great idea, we have considered doing it in both directions as well (save to address book). – Jason Wilson, on October 02, 2008 20:29

Hi,
I would love to see the option of adding locations from my address book - just locally. As it would make it a lot easier to decide where to go first and such.
And I do not see why you choose to remove my location, after hitting the target to locate me? I mean, at least I would like to keep my location on screen (similar to the map app that has a aqua pearl).
Regards,
Pan

The iPod Touch is supported, yes, we could admittedly do a better job with error handling, letting you know what is going wrong and why. A few more questions: if you have merged your device to a platial account, i can check on the web to see if the place you added made it into the db (just need your username). when you did add your location, the map showed up? and centered in the right area? AAAhhhh, if the answer to that last question is 'yes', then I suspect we might have a bug related to finding no content near enough to you. Interesting, interesting.

Hi C,
Sadly we haven't really tested Nearby outside the US much at all, but we simply use the built in location sensing system from the iPhone, so, if the default Maps application can find your location, Nearby should also be able to find you. I'm sure you have tried the 'locate me' button in the top left of the screen? I'm very curious to hear specifics about what is happening.

I'm adding this post to say that it is possible to do something like what you suggest now, although granted it requires a couple of extra steps (but shouldn't mean exiting Nearby).
Here's how:
1. Set the map up the way you want it.
2. Press the home and power buttons down together. You'll see the display flash and a screenshot (i.e. an image of the entire screen including the map exactly you have set it up) will be saved to a Photo Album called "Saved Photos".
You have access to these screenshots through the Photos application on your iPod Touch. But that's not what we're interested in here. You can also access them through Nearby.
3. Create a new marker.
4. Click the 'Add Photo' placeholder on the 'Add Marker' screen.
5. You should see the 'Saved Photos' album in your 'Photo Albums' list.
6. Select the album and then the screenshot.
7. You'll be able to move and scale the image which will allow you to expand the capture so that the interface elements are pushed out of view leaving just the map.
8. Click the 'Choose' button and continue to create your place.
This is assuming Nearby behaves the same on the Touch and the iPhone. I have an iPhone but not a Touch, so these instructions may be slightly off but should be just about right.
