ok, Julia, sounds like the bug is fixed with custom categories (if you have trouble editing the map's details in the future, let us know).
Now on to the topic you raise about hiding all the other categories. When you are adding to a custom category map, you are forced to choose one of the limited icon choices for the "marker icon" (the icon that shows up on the map), but we still offer the "additional categories" so that the content added to this map can be categorized properly in search results throughout the site.
The additional categories won't alter the marker on your map.
If you haven't gone to far with this particular map, you might consider creating a "frappr guest map" instead of an "all purpose map". You will find that option in the "make a map" drop down in the site's main navigation.

The missing ability to edit the 'location' of a 'post' or a 'place' has come up internally and with a few power users over the years, but so many other issues have simply been much more pressing at any given moment. Personally, I agree that this is very core functionality, but the work around (delete and repost) has been painless enough that hardly anyone really brings it up.
I'm curious about the particular reason you'd like to edit the location: address geocoder wasn't accurate enough? place moved? added by click from too far zoomed out?
Thanks for the feedback!

Wrong Location? There is a way to update the skyhook wireless location database (to solve issues where the iPhone, or iPod Touch thinks you are in the location of a previous residence of office).

Jason Wilson replied on October 08, 2008 21:53 to the question "Changing Locations on Itouch" in Platial:
Hi Popeye, and anyone else with similar issue,
the problem sounds like it's tied to your router. The location awareness is based (in part) on the wifi networks your device can see around you, this wifi node info is looked up in a database of known locations/lat,longs. The db belongs to skyhook wireless. They get some info from driving around with trucks capturing the locations of wifi nodes. In this case, they may have captured the location of your wifi router when it was at the old location. Fortunately they have a page where you can update their old, or wrong, data. That link is http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitw...

Coming soonDevelopment is underway, finalizing assets and creative, working on a QA plan, then the submission happens! I have already been spending HOURS staring at the content, it's sooo great, so much fun. Can't wait to really have this out and about on the streets.

Hi Pan, the local manipulation of data from one app to another is a great idea, we have considered doing it in both directions as well (save to address book). – Jason Wilson, on October 02, 2008 20:29
Jason Wilson replied on October 01, 2008 21:46 to the question "How do I locate myself on iTouch ?" in Platial:
The iPod Touch is supported, yes, we could admittedly do a better job with error handling, letting you know what is going wrong and why. A few more questions: if you have merged your device to a platial account, i can check on the web to see if the place you added made it into the db (just need your username). when you did add your location, the map showed up? and centered in the right area? AAAhhhh, if the answer to that last question is 'yes', then I suspect we might have a bug related to finding no content near enough to you. Interesting, interesting.

Hi C,
Sadly we haven't really tested Nearby outside the US much at all, but we simply use the built in location sensing system from the iPhone, so, if the default Maps application can find your location, Nearby should also be able to find you. I'm sure you have tried the 'locate me' button in the top left of the screen? I'm very curious to hear specifics about what is happening.

this is a really really great idea, it could also be purely backend/server side, and could even simply be applied to every place added. Off the top of my head though, I'm feeling like there might be terms of use restrictions for caching/storing those images (if they can even be accessed individually). But I'll surely put it on my list.

wow, thanks for the positive feedback. and good news, yes, we are currently working on what we call 'dynamapping' basically it just keeps making API calls back to Platial when you drag the map around, or zoom in or out, it refreshes the markers. No word yet on when we'll be done with 1.4, but i'm guessing within a month. – Jason Wilson, on September 10, 2008 16:36

Sorry about flaking on this problem, almost everyone was on vacation or moving this last week.
There has been a problem with editing of custom category maps (custom markers) that has been hard to pin down.
But, I go to your map http://platial.com/map/sf-music-imp/4... and see the custom colored markers just fine (not grey).
Did it fix itself?

it would surely make adding stuff easier, I have tried to get this feature built for the scavenger hunt that starts today, but there just wasn't enough time. – Jason Wilson, on August 29, 2008 20:57
