JasonL replied on December 01, 2008 14:55 to the problem "SPFW slow/killing file copying across windows network - please help" in Sunbelt Software:
Hello Crobin,
Follow the below instructions to make sure SPF is set up for Home Networking. Under Network Security, Under Applications, make sure you have Any Other Applications set to ask for both Trusted and Internet in, and permit for both Trusted and Internet out.
Also under Network security, under applications, make sure Windows File and Printer Sharing Trusted In and Trusted Out are set to Permit.
Under Predefined, change other ICMP packets set to permit for trusted and Internet. Also Broadcast, those need to be set to permit as well. Under the trusted area tab, make sure you have a check mark in all of the available options. Under Advanced tab, make sure you have Gateway Mode enabled.
If you are still having problems after making these changes, just let us know.

Jason Layman

A comment on the question "Risk definition update has failed" in Sunbelt Software:
Scrumpy_Jack,
3.1.2416 is the most recent program version. VIPRE was probably trying to upgrade the software not the definitions. Just hit Ok on that update and it should take you through the software upgrading process. If you encounter any problems, just let us know.

JasonL replied on December 01, 2008 14:39 to the question "have an issue trying to print to a Netgear print server (ps110)" in Sunbelt Software:
Hello pjm,
It could be getting blocked in a few areas, so lets try this one first. Under Network Security, under the Applications tab, change Any Other Applications to ASK for both Trusted and Internet in and out. (If you click on the Xs or check marks, they will change.) Now try to print. For each popup you get, select 'Create a rule' and then click 'Permit' There may be a few you have to do this for. After the printing goes through, then go back into Network Security and change Any Other Application back to DENY, PERMIT, DENY, PERMIT.
If that dies not work, then under Network Security, under the Applications, make sure Windows File and Printer Sharing Trusted In and Trusted Out are set to Permit.
Also, under the Predefined tab, change other ICMP packets set to permit for trusted and Internet? How about Broadcast under that section too? Those need to be set to permit. Under the trusted area tab, make sure you have a check mark in all of the available options. Under Advanced tab, make sure you have Gateway Mode enabled.
If this does not take care of the problem, please let us know.

JasonL replied on December 01, 2008 14:27 to the question "Setting up a Rule to allow Remote Desktop Inward" in Sunbelt Software:
Hello Bazzer,
First make sure you are on the most recent version of the firewall. The current version is, 4.6.1861.
If you are not on the latest version, you can download it from the link below.
SPF 4.6.1861 Install:
http://go.sunbeltsoftware.com/?linkid...
If you are on the latest version already, try turning off NIPS under the 'Intrusions' tab. I believe this is what is probably blocking remote desktop. If it is NIPS causing the problem, go under the 'Advanced' section in NIPS and turn off the medium intrusions.
If this does not solve the problem, please let us know.

If you want you can turn off the logging or specify what exactly you want logged. It should keep the thrashing to a minimum. Unless of course you want to track everything. ;)
Under the Logs & Alerts tab, then the Settings tab, you can turn all the logging off or go into the advanced setting and specify what exactly you want logged.

Vangellis,
When Windows crashes in this manor it should automatically create a Memory dump file in your C:\Windows directory. Look in this directory for a file named 'Memory.dmp' Is it possible that you could send us this file? If you need any further assistance, or if the file is to large to send through email, just contact our support department at support@sunbelt-software.com and we'll be able to help you out.

Ronzie,
Some of the NIPS medium intrusions can be from legit places, however it's hard to tell sometimes if it is or isn't malicious in nature. If you notice anything being blocked, such as Windows updates, then we can reconfigure your rules to allow that through. If everything that you use regularly is working fine with these intrusions blocked, then the firewall is doing its job. If you want to do a little digging you can probably pinpoint exactly where those intrusions are coming from. The IP address you listed seems to be coming from a MS web site like you mentioned, but the page it's referring does not exist and is not responding to ping requests, so you probably want to leave this blocked. If you have anymore questions, feel free to give us a call at; 877-673-1153 9am-6pm est.

Gerald,
Do you have any other program running real time protection? If so, try turning off the active monitoring portion of the program and see if things clear up.
