jauderho replied on August 17, 2007 23:36 to the question "When is Twitter going to get groups?" in Twitter:
Dave Winer posted about wanting something similar and I'm reposting my reply to the thread.
--start--
This was being discussed on Satisfaction (http://urltea.com/191i).
It's being described as groups/conference feature there. I personally think that using the "conference" tag is a little limiting. What essentially people are looking for is a way to be temporarily subscribed to an "event" be it a conference or a breaking news story.
The current limitation with Twitter is that someone has to manually create a new twitter account and people have to specifically follow that user and all the associated work that goes on behind the scene to create the back channel. Additionally, it would be fairly silly to create a "real" user for each event.
Having thought about it a little more, I think it would make sense if Twitter was able to introduce a different class of users that would represent different events. For such users, it should be easy to create straight from Twitter.
Imagine the following pseudo flow.
* twitter to eventbot: c event mn_bridge to create event
* eventbot to you: event mn_bridge created
* follow mn_bridge for news updates about mn_bridge collapse
* anyone can d or @ mn_bridge at this point to send updates
* stop following mn_bridge if you no longer want to follow this event
jauderho reported a problem in Twitter on August 14, 2007 06:19:
Please fix direct messages.Currently, when direct messages show up in email, the from address is noreply@twitter.com which makes it hard to have a conversation.
Suggested fixes:
1) Either use Reply-To: or From: with the sender's correct email.
2) If not sharing the email is an issue (and I prefer this one), set up redirect email boxes to get to the sender. <twitterid>@twitter.com could be an option.</twitterid>

Ooooo. This make me very happy that Satisfaction "gets it" re user signup. We are all inherently lazy and want to minimize such tasks. I can say that my experience with Spock is marred by the fact that my signup experience was fraught with HTTP 500 errors as well other badness.
Allowing people to tie responses to user names when they convert is a stroke of genius IMO.
I like openID but I'll wait and see how far that goes. Ultimately everyone should be able to own their identity and content.
One feature that I find useful is the grok your addressbook functionality that I think every social site should have. It's a quick way to build/rebuild a network.

I'm a big fan of being able to do reverse lookups. Currently, I have 3 stars (we all have to start somewhere) but I have no idea which of my responses these pertain to.
Also, when I log into my dashboard, it would be great if there was a recent activities section so that I can quickly scan replies made to my postings.-

I'm over here at Lane's suggestion from a request that I had around twitter having news events. Which now that I think about it more is a special use case.
http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to...
Another way to look at what Lane has described above could be the lifespan of a group. I would put forth 3 possible cases:
1) Breaking news event i.e. MN. I'm not there but would still like to know about it.
2) Conference. I'm there and want local information
3) Groups. Something/interest that I want to follow.
So while I'm usually a big fan of geo and LBS, in this case, I would not necessarily center around it.
I agree with not have multiple levels of security. Twitter is great because of it's simplicity and I would hate for it to lose that.
BTW I would love to see a demo of FireEagle. =) It certainly seems very interesting and I am curious about the implementation.

Excellent! Thanks for the invites and I'll look forward to the ical integration. Being able to download a flight from United to Dopplr would be killer.
One more thing, it would be great if one could specify the time on top of just the day.
BTW Firefox on Windows is confused about webcal:// links out-of-the-box.
