Here's some interesting background reading on location-based services and how hard it is to work with the carriers:

Sounds like a tough job, guys. Keep chipping away at it!

Looks nice. I've been leaving comments for people, but they seemed to just sit there.
Hooray for making them more prominent- and I'd love to see that trend continue, e.g. by making them drop down from the original post without loading a new page.
Keep up the good work, guys. It's fun to see the progress.

EVERYONE wants this. Versions of this request are all over this forum.
Near as I can figure, SMS just won't do that easily. I read somewhere BK is building a cross-platform phone app to check in (maybe even automatically, maybe via GPS and/or cell phone towers) and post simultaneously.
It's early days with Brightkite for sure. I'm still waiting to check in someplace and get a message back saying another user is there too. Lots of fun though!

I just started a new topic on this point and then found this one, so I am reposting here as well.
It seems like the privacy issues could be avoided if the location is part of a Note/photo sent. I.e. the Note is the checkin. If you don't want to be "seen" somewhere, don't post.
My phone has GPS and I'd love to see BK use that to update my location automatically based on where I am when I send the Note.
Jay shared an idea in Brightkite on May 09, 2008 00:20:
What's the outlook for phone-GPS and cell-phone tower auto-checkins?Playing with Brightkite makes me realize how siloed all the technologies in my phone are. My Blackberry Curve has GPS, so theoretically I should be able to give Brightkite (or any other app) permission to use that data, and then automatically check in just by posting a note or photo. I believe cell-phone tower triangulation can be used much the same way.
This is a really broad question, then. Is this something you guys see as feasible in any kind of near term? That would be really cool, especially since the SMS check-in seems to require very specific types of information- like street name and number.
Thanks! I'm having fun with it.
