JB2009 asked a question in Twitter on October 07, 2009 08:04:
spammers keep appearing in my @repliesMy twitter page is locked. When I check my @replies, I keep seeing people I don't know, who don't follow me and I don't follow them, repeating an @reply that one of my friends sent me a week ago. They don't Retweet it properly, they just copy the tweet from my friend (with my name included) and then add a bunch of unrelated stuff at the end.
These are all brand new accounts doing this, mostly porn looking profiles. Girls in lingerie posting links to webcams, etc.
I am sick of seeing all these strangers appearing to be replying to me, when they don't even follow me.
Here is one example but there are many others, and they all repeat the same tweet about a Halloween trip to Illinois.:
http://twitter.com/JusticeCopk/status...
(I am eeklips)(My friend tweeted the first sentence to me, but the rest is copied from other people)
They seem to be copying random tweets related to Halloween, and none are properly RT with the original author's name..
I wouldn't even care if they just copied the tweet WITHOUT my name in it, because then it wouldn't show up in my @replies.
What can I do to stop this cycle, other than just blocking the people?

When I follow someone, I want to see everything they tweet. EVERYTHING. That is why I followed them, because I find what they have to say is interesting. They might recommend a great new band to one of their friends who I don't know. I will probably never follow their friend but I might like the band.
I can change my own reply habits, and just not use the reply icon anymore. But I can't get everyone I follow to change their habits, so this new "solution" is almost useless.
The other solution they are working on, the per-user settings? How is that any simpler? I will have to go through the 100 people I follow and make 100 separate choices, instead of the one opt-in choice I made before?
Just keep it simple!
JB2009 replied on May 13, 2009 21:06 to the problem "We want all @ replies reinstated" in Twitter:
So let me get this straight:
Their new 'solution' is, if people manually type in the @name, that tweet will be seen by everyone who follows them.
But if people click the reply icon (the little swooshy arrow thing) to reply, and the @name is auto-filled in, then that tweet won't be seen unless you already follow the person they are replying to.
This is 200x more confusing than the old setting! Just change it back how it was. If only 2% of people used it, then how was it such a technical burden and why the fuss about it being scaleable? And why does the reason for the change keep changing?
It is premature to declare shenanigans?

I just ran a test.
1. I replied to Jane using the reply swoosh icon.
2. John follows me but does not follow Jane.
3. John could not see my reply to Jane.
second test:
1. I replied to Jane by typing in @Jane, instead of using the "reply" icon.
2. John follows me but does not follow Jane.
3. John could not see my reply to Jane.
third test:
1. I replied to Jane by typing in a@Jane, instead of using the "reply" icon.
2. John follows me but does not follow Jane.
3. John COULD see my reply to Jane.
conclusion: any reply with @ as the first character will not be seen by people who don't follow Jane. This does not matter if you type the name or if it is auto-filled by clicking the reply icon.
If @ is not the first character, these replies will be seen by people who follow me, but do not follow Jane. – JB2009, on May 13, 2009 13:06

Good point, there used to be THREE options, so both the "all" and the "none" people got hosed by this removal of choice. – JB2009, on May 13, 2009 12:38

I have just seen some tweets that say "I had it turned off anyway. I agree with twitter".
If you had it turned off anyway, then how was it harming you????? How were you affected at all by me having it turned on?
Just because you don't want to use a feature, then no one should be allowed to use it?
LogicFAIL.

I think the way it is now (only seeing replies to ppl you follow) was already the default. You had to specifically choose tto see all replies, which is why only a small % of poeople had that setting. And then they used the fact that most people kept the default setting (which is true of ANY internet membership or computer setting) to justify removing the choice! – JB2009, on May 13, 2009 06:32

Please return this option. I am one of the 2% who chose this option. If only 2% of people used it, then how was that harming or confusing the 98% who don't use it? The 2% who used it were not confused.
This will only lead to people circumventing the new filter, by either removing the @ symbol from their replies, or making sure it's not the first character in a tweet. And that means that ALL twitter users will be forced to read replies to strangers, instead of just the 2% who WANT to read them.
A stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet.
