It seems as if you're assuming that most people are using the wrong gear, and that would cause the avg ilvl to give a skewed few of a persons true potential with their gear in mind. While that could happen, there aren't many people that want to go read EJ and look up BiS lists for gear checking. That is the main reason I use this website, and in my opinion seeing an average ilvl would be far more useful and time efficient than reading every classes BiS list. I also don't see how gems and enchants would effect this, it was not intended to replace that. I also understand that item level does not mean a piece of gear is good, it only determines the amount of stats on the item, and again not the appropriateness for whichever class may be using it.

In short, I had thought of it to be a convenience, not a replacement to other methods.

those are the current 2 feral DPS specs depending on what your guild brings to a raid, both include survival of the fittest.
