Tom - I can only believe I'm the first to comment here since no one else has noticed this thread yet. You should go shout at some of the higher ranked people.

I'm really torn on this one. I agree you need to do something to level the playing field a bit. However, I would be crushed to see the (small amount of) $ I've worked to accumulate gone.

On a more practical side, how do you plan on scaling the predictions? If we consider one of the leaders who might have 200,000 in predictions when you take him down to 20k will his 100$ predictions become 10$? I'd really like to hear more details about how you plan on implementing this.

PS when is the quarter cut? April 1?

Hey Tom - I like it so far.

It would be nice to be able to move them around myself though - maybe some kind of tagging or folder system. There are some bets that I intend to keep for the long haul and others I'm just waiting for an uptick in the market. (Really 40% of Hubdubbers think Barack is leaving by April 30???) I would like some way of putting the long term predictions 'off to the side' so they don't clutter and I don't forget and sell them by mistake. A tag or a different folder would be great for that.

This should not be a pick on satyaki thread. He got caught and is assuredly on a watchlist. Let Hubdub do their job and lets give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

That said, Tisha I'm glad you're being more agressive about these. But its not neccessarily the creator who is gaming... I would have gladly created Survivor questions since I love the show and really wanted to see how we could have predicted something like that. I have no intention to find any Survivor spoilers so any questions I made would have been in good faith. You can't judge the integriy of the creator by the question or the integrity of the question by the creator.

Now that Roadies is out of the way, I'll just mention again that Apprentice and Biggest Loser spoilers exist as well. I think its somewhat unfair to eliminate the Roadies questions and not the others...

Some official guidance should probably exist in the rules for people new to the site wondering why there are no Survivor questions.

Roadies, Survivor and Apprentice (oh, my!)
This has been brought up in a couple of other threads, I just thought I'd give it its own thread in the hopes of getting some resolution...

What should we do with the shows which are pre-recorded? A very quick google search netted me the winners of Roadies, Apprentice and Biggest Loser. (I didn't look for Survivor since I didn't want to spoil it for me, but I'm sure its even easier to find)

The survivor questions seem to have naturally died off as it became clear that people were using spoilers for predictions, but there are still lively markets going on in other shows.

Its sad to have to cut out such a huge market of questions, but they are just way too easy to game and seem less fun for those of us who don't want to spoil. I think we (read: you, hubdub) need to make a policy on these type of shows. Perhaps we can try to restrict ourselves to the live shows? (AI, Dancing, etc)

    Thoughts?

    2 suggestions from this discussion:
    a) add emails for admin clarifications and un/suspensions (I'm guessing this will be very easy for Tom to implement)
    b) put some kind of flag capability on the comments themselves so if you want to bring a discussion to an admin's attention, you can do it within the thread without the need to doublepost. (kind like in getsatisfaction you can flag individual comments for review)

    Reposting and then adding:
    1) I guess I don't really see why there is a big problem with it unsuspending.. I'll go talk to you in getsatisfaction about that.
    2) The 'privately' is a good point. I've found flags are usually the fastest/most reliable way to get an admin's attention. Unfortunately its not public. It would be nice if we could have a public conversation but still make sure the admins knew we wanted to get their attention. There are an increasing # of threads which have long conversations between players which don't require the admins attention (or mine for that matter). (For example: http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_C... and http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/BSE_Se...)

I'm not in ANY way saying its bad for users to chat on threads, just that its harder for the admins to keep track of the discussions they need to. I tend to use the flagging system, but perhaps a double post would be better.

Really sorry this frustrated you, to be honest, I thought I was helping -- I thought you were annoyed that the market was frozen, so the obvious solution seemed to unfreeze it. I hope you can acknowledge good intentions here!

    Adding:
There have been a lot of other makets which have been unsuspended with a simple "not sure why this was suspended, reopening" note on the settlement page. I understand the 'timely' nature of the poll question makes that a little different, but I don't know how Ryan could have notified anyone that it was reopening.. like an email or something when a market you are in gets unsuspended?

Destry has been complaining that there has been too much request for user interaction and you're saying there needs to be more. I think its understandable that the admins are having trouble finding a safe middle ground.

REALLY REALLY LIKE THE 7 DAY RESTRICTION ON QUESTIONS!! (Sorry for the yelling, but I REALLY LIKE IT!!)

Also, I hope you can put some simple checks in place to alert you when a new user has "made too much money". I noticed a new user the other day who made over 26,000$ in their FIRST day. Somehow I don't think that's just luck. That's not something I usually look for, but I hope you do.

Destry - why do you keep picking on my questions? I'll be optimistic and take it as a compliment :)

I do think its a good thing for Ryan to seek consensus on somewhat gray areas like these questions. Its clear there has been a lot of bad blood in the last week with users not involved in the clarification of the questions. I can kind of go either way on these. I think its (almost) absolutely certain that there will not be another Florida contest at this point.

However, at least one question writer has chimed in and I think they should get a bigger say in the settlement of their question than the rest of the rif-raf.

jenniandboys replied on March 17, 2008 12:56 to the problem "i'll be leaving the site....happy gambling" in Hubdub:

    jenniandboys
As one of the few non-power (feeble?) users in the forum, I'd like to add my humble perspective:
    a) agree power user vetting is critical. i think users should NOT be able to bid on the questions they vet (and possibly on the ones they write too although this is difficult for the really prolific questioners)
    b) automated generation of the everyday questions would be really great and eliminate some issues

    Short term solution comments:
    a) definitely a question should be suspended during clarification. the spitzer question came down to betting on what ryan would do, not anything about the actual news case
    b) certainly the question creator should get a bigger say in what he/she meant the question to be. too frequently they seem to be excluded from the decison making process.
    c) '5. finding consensus' will be very difficult to define. do you take the first 3 commenters you get? all the comments in the first 2 hours of posting? 1/3 of the people who have bet on the question? even after 280+ comments on spitzer, do you really know what the consensus was on when he resigned? I don't.

Anyway, if its important to get some discussion going about a particular question, there should be someway to call attention to it. Because I'm very bored and find it amusing, I always read through all of the new comments posted so I notice when a topic is getting a lot of discussion. However, I'd like to think that most people have better things to do with their time. Maybe you could have another tab (besides newest, activity, closing soon, etc) that says "awaiting clarification or consensus" so people can see easily the questions that you're looking for comments on and see if they have a say in them.

Ditto to infernal - seems like most peoples comments were geared toward generating a discussion that would fix this issue in the long-term. As long as we know a fix is coming, I have no problem ignoring death for another month or two.

(I also like the suspend date notion though for casulties)

Ryan - I agree its not practical to do anything about the existing markets, more wanted to start a discussion for future questions. I'm really just using them for an example.

Looking at the Barack for VP set, the yes percentages are at :
    38%, 7%, 20% and 25%

Its pretty simple to put a lot of money on the 7% percent and hedge your bets on one of the others and then no matter the outcome you walk out with beaucoups h$. (My husband worked out the ideal amount of $ to bet based on the percentage difference -- sorry we're geeks).

Perhaps my question is coming back to the central question: is hubdub a news predictions site or a betting site. I'd rather predict the news than accumulate meaningless $ (probably why I have so little!!)

As a side note, I somewhat disagree that similar markets don't get bet on. There are respectively, 27k, 29k, 10k and 3k on the 4 Hil/Bar markets. Its certainly been in the news a lot, and is an important question but the interest in the acutal question gets spread out over 4 markets. Instead of 4 middling questions, we should have one question at 70k on the front page.

Again, I'm really just trying to use the VPs as an example. I'd be just as happy to switch to talking about AI or Roadies questions. I know the power user vetting is coming along soon and assume most of the vetters will be members of this forum. I just think the degree of similarity is a good thing to keep in mind as the questions are getting vetted.

    Drowning in vice-presidential candidates!
I've been noticing that there are a lot of markets which are, if not exact duplicates, in essence asking the same thing. Having multiple extremely similar markets makes it a lot easier to game the system, especially when they have different prediction levels.

A quick survey of the democratic vice presidential questions shows 4 related to an Obama/Clinton ticket:
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_H...
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/What_i...
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Who_wi...
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/If_Hil...

Three related to John Edwards as a running mate:

    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_J...
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Now_th...
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_J...

    One for Al Gore:
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_A...

    and two more:
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_t...
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_t...

I'm not saying these aren't interesting questions (I esp like the prior elected office question) but so many of them are basically subsets of each other, if not exact duplicates.

I could list a similar number on Mccain's vice presidential prospects as there are an awful lot of them as well.

I know most of these have been around too long to void (although I would really like to trim down the Barack/Hillary set) and I doubt we can do much to alleviate the current situation. But I'm hoping we can do something to prevent this from happening in the future. Assumedly the power user vetting will help, but there needs to be some guidance about what a "duplicate" market is. How different does a question need to be?

Although I'm bringing this up in the context of the vp questions, you could think about in terms of the Roadie or American Idol questions.. What if we had questions for all remaining 11 American finalists saying "what week will they go home" as well as individual questions every week saying "will Person A go home this week" for each contestant and then the standard "who will go home this week" question. Each of these questions is slightly different, and yet I think that would be an absurd number of AI questions to pose. Its only personal taste that I haven't created all those other questions and in fact many of them do exist for the Roadies show. Is that too many? Are they too similar? I think so, but I'd really like to hear what other people think.
