The "Request Access" feature is just the first step in a larger plan to meet the needs of our users. We have other solutions that will be implemented as this develops that should meet the needs as described above. – Rachel Pennig, on May 02, 2008 17:08

That's nice, but if users have to *request* access, then that means someone has to *grant* access, and that's just as bad. I can't recall a single post here at GS where anyone let you know that this was a desired feature, so perhaps you're receiving those requests privately. – Guy Fawkes, on May 02, 2008 16:38

Hi Jill - completely understandable- you need to get work done! I just wanted to let you know we are working on it, so I hope you come back and try PBwiki in the future! – Rachel Pennig, on May 02, 2008 15:13

Jill -
what provider is that?
This is enough to make me move as well.
I expected to be able to have my community easily write in our wiki, once we gave them the name of the wiki. The fact that people can't easily edit without being given indivudal permission makes this wiki not useable for our purposes.
Nor can I find understandable help instructions as to what other options there are.

Thanks Ian, for your reply. In the meantime there's two more questions here for writing in a 2.0 wiki without an Account: #1 & #2. Remember the days that PBwiki told us to switch from the old board to GS for a better search function?
You better hurry @ fixing, otherwise 2.0 will go Bye Bye Hasta La Vista: nobody wants it or can use it and want to revert toXP1.0.

A couple of interesting work arounds here! Unfortunately as you've noted they are brittle solutions. (For example upcoming changes to some low-level plumbing will probably break Goliath's proposal.)
We really do understand the desire behind these solutions and we're working hard to create ones for PBwiki 2.0 which are robust, secure, and useable.
We love that our users are so determined and creative. Thanks for continually reminding us how important these log-in options are to the community.
While the official answer right now is "No" there's no supported way to do this in PBwiki 2.0, discussions like this one keep our feet to the fire.

Thanks, that would be great. Most of the time, we never hear about the successful "behind-the-scenes" solutions. – Guy Fawkes, on April 29, 2008 14:52

No, not at all. They've been in touch a couple of times and I'm working with one of their proposed workarounds to see if it will work with me. I'll update this thread when I figure out which one, if any, works for me. – Jill, on April 29, 2008 14:45

Thanks, Guy, but that is a ridiculously high barrier to participation and just won't do. I'll wait to hear from an official pbwiki rep, but if that's the best I can do I'll have to move on to another provider.
1.0 doesn't have the customization I need to make the site fit in with our university's visual style guide.

Jill asked a question in PBwiki on April 28, 2008 12:45:
Wide-open writer permissions: can I do that? How?I want anyone who knows the name of my wiki to have writer permission (because it's for students *and* prospective students, and I won't know who all of the prospective students are before they want to access the wiki, so issuing one-by-one invitations won't work for me).
How do I do that? And if I can't do that, what is the closest I can come to it?
