Jim replied on January 10, 2009 01:39 to the question "Beta test foxmarks for IE error 3 - Now cannot sync with Firefox" in Xmarks:
Thanks for the suggestions Eric. I looked at the topic you suggested and into suggestions sent by another.
What I finally decided to do was go to the myFoxmarks on the server and delete all my bookmarks. Of course prior to doing that I made sure that I had a good set of backup bookmarks I had saved locally earlier in the day. I then deleted all of the bookmarks in my Firefox browser and imported my backup bookmarks. Afterwards I forced foxmarks on that computer to overrite data stored on the foxmarks server. After checking myFoxmarks on the server to make sure that the upload went properly I then did forced downloads to the browsers on my other computers both into firefox and IE. I had used my Mac with Safari and bookmarks as the benchmark computer since never had any problems with the Mac/Safari configuration.
So I am happy to report that all 5 of my Firefox browsers which were effected are updated with the set of bookmarks on the Foxmarks Server and all sync properly as does the Mac/Safari continue with no problem. IE syncs properly of all PC's (4).
I was also curious why the problem affected all of my Firefox Browsers concurrently on 5 different computers (not the Mac/Safari). This sync problem started immediately after installing and syncing IE. My theory is that something must have been corrupted on the server bookmark set after an IE sync. Since deleting all the server files (common to all computers) and uploading a fresh set the problem no longer exists and I can report a Happy Face.
Thank You,
Jim

You have solved the problem with Safari and in fact the sync works reliably on the Mac/Safari and IE but NOT on any of my Firefox browsers. No action to the Safari team, this is just for information...I am probably just asking Foxmarks to do too much with several different operating systems and computers all being synced to the bookmarks stored on the Foxmarks server.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today I installed the Beta foxmarks for IE on three of my PC's, three XP and one Vista. During initial setup I always set the Sync settings to "Keep Favorites on the server; discard those on computer" selected since I want all of my computers initially synced to the same set of bookmarks on the foxmarks server.
All of my bookmarks are synchronized to the foxmarks server between the four PC's with Internet Explorer browser and the Safari browser on my Mac.
NOW FOR THE PROBLEM: I can no longer sync bookmarks on any of my Firefox Browsers, thats on the 4 PC's and Mac. Again, I can sync just fine with Safari on the Mac with the existing set of bookmarks stored on the server.
When trying to Sync the Firefox bookmarks on (all computers) I get an error message that says: Unknown error occurred (3) We just encountered an unknown error(number is 3).

I believe you have found the problem regarding Growl. I made the change to the FoxmarksPref.plist file and so far all is working well. Thank you for your dedicated work. Foxmarks is a great capability and having it working with both Firefox and Mac Safari is greatly appreciated.
* Quit Foxmarks for Safari
* From your home directory, open Library > Foxmarks> FoxmarksPrefs.plist
* Edit the key "useGrowl" and set the value to "false"
* Save FoxmarksPrefs.plist
* Start Foxmarks for Safari

I am consistently having crash problems with the new 0.0.24 update. I have a log file from the past couple of days and can provide it if you want. Once I restart foxmarks from the control panel the syncs are working properly between my Mac and PC's (& vice versa.) However shortly thereafter the Safari Foxmarks crashes and its icon goes away.

Its getting better, that is the program runs longer with 0.0.24 before crashing. See attached log file.

Thanks Terry, this is the most current comment I put on: http://getsatisfaction.com/people/jim...
I don't know why I hadn't done this earlier but I just did a complete uninstall of the Safari Foxmarks using the provided UnInstaller. Then I did a fresh install. At the moment I am getting successful sync. BUT, the icon continues to go away by itself as it just did as I was writing this note.
I don't recall when I started using version 0.0.23 but one my prior logs recorded "2008-12-18 21:35:47 -0500: Info: ===== Started Foxmarks for Safari.app version 0.0.23 on Mac OS X/10.5.6 (Build 9G55) ====="
I have been having the disappearing icon problem prior and since 0.0.23 and of course the fresh re-install was with version 0.0.23.
What has changed, back for the good, is I can now sync without errors but still have to do a manual start-up when the application crashes.

I havent heard from you in a while and wondering if there has been any progress resolving the foxmarks crash that seems to occur on my Mac/Safari. I have another problem other than consistent loss of the icon. Now Foxmarks develops an error and wont successfully sync Safari on my Mac. Foxmarks continues to work with no problems on Firefox on my Mac and other PC computers.
I sent you a compete log file by email just a while ago. The few lines of log below gives you an idea of the error thats returned with I try to sync.

I just now glanced over at the Mac which has just been sitting on the desk doing nothing and saw that the icon is no longer visible and checking the Control Panel it says that Foxmarks is NOT running. So Foxmarks for some reason just quit. I will restart Foxmarks from the control panel and then send you the log file via email. I just manaully started Foxmarks and now the icon is showing.
I am pasting the last part of the log where things quit and I manually restarted:

Since turning the application back on from the control panel, after sending you the log file when it was not running, the application has continued to run. I have done a restart and a complete shutdown and start up of the computer and the application started up automatically each time. I do not know what caused the problem yesterday but all seems fine now. I did just receive an update to Foxmarks and installed that. There is no outward change that I have noticed after the installation which went just fine and works just fine. I am now running version 0.0.23

Must restart Foxmarks after close & restart of SafariFoxmarks works just great for me all in except one area. When I close Safari most of the time the foxmarks Icon will not come back when I restart Safari. I must go to the system prefs control panel and manually start foxmarks. Then the icon appears and all works just great. I just updated to Mac OS X 10.5.6 on my MacBook, however this same problem occurred with the prior system release.

I experienced the disappearing safari tool icon after installing the foxmarks on my Mac tonight. The Control panel was there. And wouldnt you know it for some reason the foxmarks login server went down for a while afterwards. Anyway to make the story short. I did as you suggested above when the server came back up and after a re-sync all worked perfectly with the icon now showing and my bookmarks are now in sync on my Mac, my three XP PC's and my Vista PC. SUPER!-
