JJ replied on November 18, 2009 16:33 to the question "tried to log at xmarks.fr : all my passwords disapeared !!" in Xmarks:
The website xmarks.fr is not affiliated with us (Xmarks Inc.) in any way. If you logged in with your xmarks account email and password, it is possible that whoever built that site is trying to capture your login info (though we have no other evidence of that happening). Even if that was the case, someone with your xmarks login info cannot decrypt your passwords without your "PIN" - the second password you established when you turned on Xmarks password sync.
The purpose of that PIN is to make sure that you're the only person that can access / decrypt your passwords.
To better figure out what's going on inside your account, you should email support@xmarks.com as we'll need the email address of your account so we can investigate further.
Thanks,
James

Anna,
Can you try one more thing:
1. Do a Google search for "cycling" with SearchTabs installed
2. On the resulting search results page, do a forced refresh by pressing cntrl-shift-R (or command-shift-R on a Mac)
this will refresh the browser cache for the page.
in parallel, we'll investigate any potential conflicts with the other add-ons you mentioned.
thanks,
james

In case you missed our update on other threads...
We just released an alpha version of Xmarks for Chrome! You can get all the details in our Xmarks Blog post, which includes directions for joining and getting started.
We've also got a new Get Satisfaction product forum available for Chrome, please let us know what you think! Just remember that this is an alpha release, there will be some issues that need to be ironed out.
Thanks,
James

JJ set one of JJ's replies as an official response to "Windows 7 icons dont work" in Xmarks
JJ replied on July 07, 2009 00:48 to the question "Windows 7 icons dont work" in Xmarks:
IE does support dragging files to the Favorites Bar. Right click on a favorite and choose properties. In the resulting dialog the "General" tab should tell you the type of file (see image below). It should say "Internet Shortcut (.url)" if it's actually a favorite / bookmark.
If it is a .url file and it's opening an image program, it means some application on your PC (probably the image program), changed the "Default Program" setting for .url files.
To change those go to the start menu, type "Default Programs", go there and then choose "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program" and set .url to be opened by Internet Explorer.
Hope that helps,
-James

Hi T,
I've been running Windows 7 RC1 with Xmarks for a while with no problems.
Can you provide us with more info? For example:
- are you running Xmarks for Firefox, Internet Explorer, or both?
Where are you clicking on favorite icons - in your browser or in the Windows desktop / shell?
Thanks,
James

JJ replied on May 14, 2009 03:22 to the question "Why don't my synced passwords appear in Firefox?" in Xmarks:
It's hard to answer this one without more info, but here's some basic info that might help:
Xmarks can encrypt passwords that you've stored in Firefox and sync them with Firefox passwords on another computer. If Firefox is not configured to store passwords then there will be nothing to sync.
To check this go to Firefox Options > Security Tab and make sure that "Remember passwords for sites" is checked.
Next, go to the Privacy Tab. Is "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" checked? If it is, click the "Settings..." button to the right. In the list of data types to clear, make sure that "Saved Passwords" is not checked.
Make sure you have that configuration on all computers that you want to use password sync on. Otherwise Firefox will not persistently store your passwords and Xmarks will therefore not have any password data to sync.
Next, on each computer, go to Xmarks Settings > Sync Tab and make sure that "Passwords" is checked under "Synchronization Types".
Now as you use Xmarks to sync across machines it should securely sync any password that you tell Firefox to remember.
Hope that helps,
James
JJ replied on May 14, 2009 03:11 to the question "how do i find my passwords" in Xmarks:
Mark & Moonie,
If you have the password stored in Firefox on one of your computers, simply go to Firefox Options > Security Tab and click the "Saved Passwords..." button. Next click the "Show Passwords" button in the bottom right. Firefox will ask you if you are sure - click yes.
Now you can see a list of all sites you have stored passwords for and the specific password for each site.
Note that this is a Firefox feature and has nothing to do with Xmarks. Xmarks only stored your passwords in encrypted form and this cannot decrypt or display them.
JJ replied on April 16, 2009 07:26 to the problem "Please help me delete Xmarks!" in Xmarks:
If you're using Xmarks in the Firefox web browser, go to your Tools menu and choose "Add-ons". From there you should be able to select Xmarks and click Uninstall.
If you're using Xmarks for Internet Explorer, look for "Xmarks for IE" in the "Uninstall or change a program" list within the Windows Control Panel. Select it and click Uninstall.
If you want us to help you solve the password prompt problem you're experiencing, just say the word and we'll try to help.

JJ replied on April 15, 2009 23:30 to the question "Types of Information Collected" in Xmarks:
Steve,
First off, thank you for your thoughtful question. You are correct in noting that our new discovery features do need to transmit browser data, like the current site url in order to provide "Similar Sites" results, and that each of these features can be easily turned off.
We state in our privacy policy that in conjunction with using our service "we may collect a variety of information from and about you in different ways." That said, I think you raise a good point and we will work to add more specific examples and clarity around the data collected and how it is used in the next iteration of the privacy policy.
Thanks,
James
JJ replied on April 15, 2009 14:33 to the question "Can I prevent xmarks from sharing my bookmarks?" in Xmarks:
Please read:
You can log into your Xmarks account here:
http://login.xmarks.com/account
On the right hand side, labeled "ACCOUNT OPTIONS" you will see:
1) an option to opt out of aggregate bookmark analysis, labeled "Change Bookmark Contribution". This will remove your bookmarks from our aggregated discovery engine while still allowing you to sync.
-and-
2) an option to completely delete your account labeled "Delete Account". This will remove all your data from our servers and delete your account. FYI, upon deletion your account user name will not be available for new accounts in the future.

JJ replied on April 12, 2009 00:22 to the question "how do I manage xmarks in Internet explorer?" in Xmarks:
Xmarks for Internet Explorer installs as a "Task Tray Application" in Windows XP and Windows Vista. You can click the Xmarks icon in the lower right to open the Xmarks settings dialog, or right-click the icon to show a menu similar to the Tools menu you're familiar with from our Firefox version.
Here's what it looks like in Vista:
