A comment on the problem ""The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation"" in Dell:
Absolutely - i had exactly this problem - due to the way the cables fit into the back of a Dell (and, in my experience frequently fall out!!) you get a strain point in the cable and it's common to end up with exposed wires - I've had two Dell's now and both have done this (won't be buying Dell again...) which generated this error message. I changed my AC adapter to a Dell approved one and then started getting the message again. very frustrating. – JO, on October 21, 2008 10:54

I have the same problem with an XPS M1710 and with my previous Dell inspiron.
On my inspiron, the battery was replaced through the free scheme when Dell's started exploding but this battery has NEVER held a charge and they refused to replace that one.
My M1710 is about 18 months old and has just announced (with no warning) that i need to replace my battery. I rarely use the battery as i keep it plugged in.
Is it just that Dell batteries suck?-
