The problem is happening again right now at 8:45 PM ET on Aug. 3rd. I know it's ID causing the issue with my site performance, or at least I strongly suspect it, because the ID homepage itself is returning a 504 error (when it didn't, intensedebate.com site performance was extremely slow).
Also, all of the comments in my posts disappeared during the time of the performance hit.

Thanks - here's the culprit:

Comments do not synch from WordPress to ID (but ID to WordPress works fine).Comments do not synch from WordPress to ID (but ID to WordPress works fine).
I don't understand why the synching doesn't work both ways, as I have the "Sync WP Comments" option set to "Sync that data back to IntenseDebate" in the IntenseDebate settings.
I have several examples of comments that are input automatically into the WP comments (mostly pingbacks found by the plugin "Tweetbacks") that are displayed in the WP Comments view, but never show up in the ID plugin.

Oh, it's been re-enabled for some time and performance is fine. Word from the provider is that they aren't aware of any server issues during that time. The reason I pegged the issue on the ID plug-in is that the ID plug-in has been confirmed to have caused two issues in the past where the behavior was exactly the same as during this issue, and disabling the ID plug-in seemed to correct the problem.
From what I can tell, if there is an issue with the plug-in contacting your servers, the site performance gets so bad that eventually it times out.

Thanks, man!
This helps me a lot in terms of trying to optimize the site a bit.
It doesn't explain though why the site failed to load at all and returned 500 errors, and also couldn't load the wp-admin pages, when the ID plugin was active yesterday.
Would a connectivity issue between the plugin at my hosted site and the ID infrastructure cause that to happen?

Thanks! I did re-enable, I've also been checking with the hosting provider to see if there were any issues around the same time but you can guess their answer...
I can confirm that performance turned to normal when I disabled the ID plugin, though I'm not sure if that was coincidental or not.
I'd love to know which widgets were loading slowly?
Thanks! – Joe, on July 09, 2009 19:52

Comments on WordPress Blog are disappearingComments on my WordPress blog 1WineDude.com are disappearing after being entered by me and by visitors. This is happening intermittently.
Unfortunately, it's happening on a day when my blog is seeing it's highest traffic ever.
The Reply counts for some nested comments is also showing what I think are correct counts for replies to that thread, but often the replies are NOT being shown by IntenseDebate.
Help!
