A comment on the question "why isn't my twitter tracking working?" in Twitter:
Very helpful workaround for the time being, thank you! Of course I'd still really appreciate it if it could be a standard Twitter feature again. – Victoria Marinelli, on August 25, 2008 06:09

Lesley, thanks for the response. I did post it privately initially, but then I realized that and changed my settings to public and re-posted the image. Looking at it again, the image is still set to private, which is odd. I'll post something again soon and report back here how that goes. – @joebird, on August 13, 2008 17:24

Joe, did you post your photo while in Private mode? If so, your settings for "everyone else" will need to be "city" or "exact" for your post to share to Twitter. – Lesley, on August 13, 2008 16:12

I have created a bot that will provide the same functionality.
1. Follow Tweettrak
2. Wait for me to follow you (or for twitter to enable autofollow for me... see http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to... )
3. Send a direct message to tweettrak: 'track @RyanK' (substituting your username, or any other search term)
4. enjoy track functionality!
5. Tweet about it and tell your friends!
Website coming soon which will let you filter out people you already have device notifications on for, among some other features. It should scale really well as long as I don't hit any artifical limits for sending messages... in which case twitter should be able to whitelist it... assuming they aren't as slow as they are to turn on auto-following.
Happy to take feedback and suggestions.. I'm tracking both tweettrak and @RyanK... So, I'll see your tweets

Hello. Track is currently offline so although Twitter remembers our tracked keywords, we are not receiving tracked messages.
You can check the status of the Track feature at any time by going to http://status.twitter.com. You will see it in the sidebar on the right.
Currently, the word Track is highlighted in red in the sidebar. If you move your mouse over the word "Track", you'll see the additional info: "Offline. Needs reworking."

Looks like notices are coming more frequently. I've gotten a few notices of new followers recently, all spammers. They always come right after I post an update. At least I can then block them.
Interestingly, Twitter is still doing nothing to block obvious abuse. The last follower I got was on someone who first posted less than an hour ago and was already following 4,111 people!

Great idea! I also like mdoeff's idea too. Twitter should so get that in their system. – Chris Thomson, on June 26, 2008 18:03

@familydoctormag, Good to know you got the email notification when I followed you. I'm not a spammer! Hurray! 8-) – mdy, on June 14, 2008 03:06

I'm still getting follower notifications via email when the person who follows me isn't a mass-follower. Afaik, Twitter only supresses email notifications when the user that followed you is already known to them to be a mass-follower.
As a test, I just followed you (@familydoctormag) using one of my accounts. It will be interesting to see if you get a notification email.
I know from other threads in this forum that Twitter flags for review any account that has been blocked by a lot of people, and I have no reason to believe that's not still the case.
It also looks like they will be soon (if not already) be enforcing limits in the number of follows, based on this new FAQ page that I saw recently.
FamilyDoctorMag replied on June 12, 2008 07:09 to the problem "Not getting email when someone follows me" in Twitter:
Has there been any other answer to this yet, or is this still the policy? Why is there not just a cutoff number of people you're allowed to follow per hour? Secondary: If enough people mark you as a spammer, Twitter could look at your account to see if you are.
This system of hiding followers is both filtering out nonspammers and taking the control out of our hands. Please consider changing it--soon!

I also agree with David and GeekMommy - I'd like to know without having to page through, check the new follower's page, then block as needed. – pattigibbons, on June 12, 2008 00:49

Agree with David and GeekMommy. This is not a solution, it adds to the problem. – Scott Cranfill, on June 10, 2008 03:19

I like this idea. I would add one thing - a checkbox configuration to enable/disable this "spammer alert" email. – mdoeff, on June 08, 2008 20:37

You get e-mail when a non-spam account starts following you. I'll prove by following you ;-) //edit: voila you got mail ;-) – ikkekietje, on June 08, 2008 19:38
