As a school librarian it is a constant struggle to encourage teachers to hold their students accountable for citing their sources. It is more complicated by the blocking of sites at our school. Students can access cites at home that we can not access from our school to check for accuracy or use.

So far, I'm asking students to post reflections and what they learned in class, on the internet, or on the wiki. I'm stoked that they are so excited about using the wiki, but I'm getting a lot of comments left by students like, "yo what's up," "hi girlfriend what are you doing," etc. I'm glad they are using it, and I want to encourage it as much as possible, but I'm wondering if it is getting too conversation-y. Any other teachers have similar thoughts???

As educators and parents of 21st Century students, it is imperative that we teach students how to credit resources!!!! This a digital native's utmost responsibility and a critical standard of digital literacy. Plagiarism MUST become an archaic practice of the 19th Century!

I teach 3rd grade. Students will cite works by using the title of the book or the Internet url where information was found. This is a good feature to use even at young ages because many students at this age cut and paste the text and feel that they have put down their own ideas. I will definately try to encourage citing all work that is not the students' own original work.

I think the best practice for me would be to use the word "leader" followed by the 001 numbering system. It should work well with my work.

Another thought is for student organizations, I am an advisor for a couple. The best practice could be to use the name of the org (or a shortened version) again with the 001 numbering system. That way I'll be able to keep track of which student is involved in which organization.

I am using the students' first names only. My wiki is a private wiki, so I feel that first names are fine. I would never post a last name on the wiki that is for elementary age students.

As educators we know we must cite, and teach our kids to do so as well. The Internet makes plagiarism too easy, and even people who should know better (Joe Biden and Steven Ambrose) get caught - or at least people writing for them get caught. There's another level of citing I think is powerful for kids to learn and that's hyperlinking within their own on-line text. One of the greatest benefits of the Internet is being able to read someone else's ideas and then "drill down" to read the source of their information in its original context.

Anything you put in a wiki that is not your own material should be footnoted. That would include phrases or more of text, images, sounds, movies - basically all content you did not create.

I have a list and try to use the same id for every thing I sign up for with my students. I keep the list in Excel. All of the ids follow this pattern: [school id of SMS][Graduation Year][dash][number assigned by my from 01 to 99]. The id can stay with the student from Kindergarten up to eighth grade. An example would be SMS2009-01 meaning student one on my list who graduates the eighth grade this year. If students leave the school, I do not reassign the number. If a new student joins the school, they receive the next number in the series.

I ask that students cite and give credit to anything they use that is not their original work. I give several personal examples where my work was used without citation, and we use journal writing before we post on our wiki and blog to understand how it feels to be plagarized. We talk about open source and Creative Commons, and about what it means to be ethical.

Any information that is the intellectual property of others should be cited, especially if it isn't in the public domain. Students should be taught to give a full, proper citation as a footnote in their work when they use someone else's work.

I teach media and research skills to students kindergarten through sixth grade. Putting a statement about giving credit to author of a work does not get the job done unless the teachers have taught and insisted on a student providing proper citations. I provide links to the MLA Bibliography page and I also use "citations" to teach how to use various MSWord controls for color and highlighting options.

I normally use the student's firstname and firstinitial of lastname for the username. I use the student's district ID# for their password. This method helps me easily identify the user. Conflict only occurs when I have users with the same firstname and same firstinitial of their lastname. In that case, I'd add another letter or two to their lastname initial.

I like Michael's idea! But, I think I will tweek it a bit. In my grade book Harry Smith would be 309Smhar. We can't use full names in our district

Student naming must be done in accordance with school and district policy. I assign my students a number that reflects their period and thier place in my grade book. Harry Smith in period 3 would then be 309 if he was the ninth student on my roster. I will use 309Smith as his username and name.

I most certainly think that students should give credit to the resources where they found their information for research. I also believe that they should site where they found any images.

I work hard with students to have them understand why they can't just copy anything off the internet anytime, anywhere. However, we don't have a consistent view at our school (K-6) about how and when to cite. When students come to the lab, I go over the use of tools which make it so simple. (My favorite tool is no longer available.)
