I wonder if there's still something funky about the MX records which is causing gmail, and possibly other providers, to think this is spam?

Interesting, I think you have the right idea about what caused it though, that the note that was replied to was a private note by someone who wasn't your friend.

That's another condition to add to the note grabbing query!
