A comment on the question "Support for additional "Input" methods for Sandy" in I want Sandy:
Hey, I got an answer back from their support! They say that this fix is in the works, and will be rolled out in the next week or two. Then, we should be able to create custom commands, the e-mails will come from our own address, and it will work exactly like Jott used to. – Quasihellfish, on October 01, 2008 20:05

Are you using their new "make your own command" feature? I just logged onto their site for the first time in a while, and tried it out because it would be a lot cleaner if it worked this way. But you're right, e-mails com from the 'donotreply' address, so it doesn't work. The way I got it to work was to create a new contact, and use your private sandy address. This way, the e-mails come from the e-mail address you used to signup with Dial2Do. The only annoyance is that it's a multi step process to say "email", then "sandy", then wait for the address to be read back to you, then say your message. But it does work this way. If the custom command worked, it would be perfect. I'll be submitting a suggestion via their site. – Quasihellfish, on September 30, 2008 19:50

@Quasihellfish: thanks for the great trip about Dial2Do; I'm looking for something that works from the UK and this looks like it might be just the ticket. I'm probably being completely dense, but can you talk me through how you get Dial2Do to work with Sandy? Since emails through Dial2Do come from their 'donotreply' address, I'd have thought Sandy wouldn't recognise them... Any help much appreciated! ;-) – josefeen, on September 30, 2008 12:50

Dial2Do, out of the box, works almost perfectly with Sandy already. I switched to it after Jott went out of beta. The only thing that doesn't work is tagging (like saying "tag with ....", the way we used to do with Jott). Because the messages are sent to Sandy just the same way an e-mail would, Sandy would have to be trained to look for "tag with" commands from any e-mail, not just from Jott. If she did this, then she could conceivably work with any voice-to-email transcription service.

The Twitter change in policy will make a huge difference for me too - I got Sandy to DM me all the time to remind me about stuff I just wouldn't remember otherwise. I did start off using the O2 email-to-sms service, but like Chris discovered this can quickly get expensive.. :-S
I totally understand that it's not Sandy's fault (I even get why Twitter have done this - I did wonder how it could possibly be cost effective for them), so won't be cancelling my account - but it does make it much less useful for me. Being able to fire off DMs when on the move (and email wasn't accessible or convenient), and receiving them back was the cornerstone of Sandy effectiveness for me.
I do also think that a message should be added on the Sandy website as suggested; particularly on the Twitter settings page if a member is in an affected area - surely that wouldn't be hard to do?

I was looking around for the email to text option. o2 don't have the most organized of sites. I found it by logging into their webmail. Looks like they charge for each sms sent! Makes it unusable to be notified of emails.
@conrad. It's possible to receive MMS messages. o2 of a webpage which you visit on the iPhone. You have to activate the service which doesnt take long. I think I read somewhere that o2 are working on an email to mms service - not sure on that.

I have an iPhone so MMS isn't possible, I tried going with the alternative... went to www.o2.co.uk to switch on email-to-text as suggested. I couldn't find anywhere to switch that on. So I just rang O2's iPhone Customer Service... the woman there had never heard of "email-to-text." She spent 5 minutes asking her advisors -- with me on hold -- and came back to tell me that it couldn't be done. "We don't offer that service." *sigh*
I've also tried the +44 and O2 UK thing. Still nothing.

@Rael: I tried it too and it seems to be working, except in lists (multiple tasks in a single email). Is it possible that it does not work yet in that scenario?
@Aitese: you are asking Sandy to send multiple reminders for the same task, which does not seem to be supported at the moment. Maybe start a new discussion? – Olivier Gourment, on July 24, 2008 13:43

I just used this fir the first time with an actual upcoming meal, at first I exprerimented with the possibility of using the tag for multiple reminders:
Remind me about Cassie's meal at Ginny's in Bromley at 6pm 15th August @reminder 9pm 14th August @reminder 4pm 15th August
The outcome was totally borked:
I added these to your calendar:
#1 Fri, 15/8 6:00pm Cassie's meal at Ginny's in Bromley 4pm
- email reminder at 5:00pm
- tagged with @reminder
#2 Fri, 25/7 7:00am Cassie's meal at Ginny's in Bromley
- email reminder on Thu, 14/8 at 9:00pm
- tagged with @reminder
Maybe this IS possible but I'm doing it wrong? The idea was I needed to know to put some clothes out the night before, even shave perhaps as I usually trot off to work in the morning looking like a bum, but I still wanted reminding in the afternoon as I also rush out of the office like a kid at the end of school and would not get on the right route to the restaurant.
Is there a way to use multiple tags? I decided to tell Sandy to forget these first 2 and tried with just the evening reminder and the system works flawlessly, great work guys!

Hi Olivier. Sorry it took so long — sometimes this is the nature of these things and why we usually don't mention specifics about scheduling, etc. – Rael Dornfest, on July 24, 2008 06:32

This sounds promising. I am just wondering why it was said to be due 6 months ago? – Olivier Gourment, on July 24, 2008 02:04
