A comment on the problem "Low-color, ugly graphics and no Windows background" in BumpTop:
did you restart bumptop after changing those settings? Another thing you could try is to change the settings to "high" and try that. – Jufa, on August 20, 2008 10:01

I told it to let the application decide what 3D settings to use (which included antisotropic filtering and other things) but it did not change anything. – Danny F, on August 20, 2008 00:06

What kind of nVIDIA software? Can you temporaly disable it? If you can, disable it and then run bumptop again (maybe even restart your computer).
But if you can't disable the software, try to find if there's any kind of setting that has something to do with antisotropic filtering, texture preference or MipMap detail level.
If there are, try to change them to something like "application controlled". Or you can also tell us what kind of options there are so we can start from that :)

There is some nVIDIA software, but I've never used it. – Danny F, on August 19, 2008 19:17

Community contributed 3D models for icons is an excellent idea! And we could draw on the existing models at Google's 3D Warehouse.
In fact, there seems to be one fore firefox already

That's a great idea! I've been really impressed with BumpTop while playing around with it but now all I can think about is how awesome it would be to have a creature from Spore or something walking around my desktop and playing with my icons. Or even something much simpler, imagine a paintbrush laying there for Photoshop, a little foxglobe rolling around for Firefox, etc. So long as it's popular enough (and I have no doubt it will be), the community could supply models for icons without a 3d version
A comment on the problem "Bumptop doesn't startup! (Bump this folder does.)" in BumpTop:
Bumptop.exe or a bump this folder was not running when I encountered this. Bumptop acts like it has 0.1 FPS at that time. The window becomes bigger and bigger every ~10 to ~20 seconds.. It's very strange. This sometimes also happens to a Bump This Folder. – YoungScripter, on August 02, 2008 11:28

Hi,
BumpTop Desktop checks to see if there is another running instance of BumpTop before launching. The problem is, as you pointed out, that is the wrong behavior when you have Bump'd a folder-- it should ignore those instances of BumpTop.
YoungScripter, could you see if Jon's suggestion helps-- namely, checking to see if there are any other running instances of BumpTop?
There is no option to override the check, but you've certainly brought the issue to our attention. Thanks!

I had a similar problem. When I looked into it though, I realized that Bumptop was still running in the background. This is caused by the bump this folder issue. When any folder is being bumped. I will NOT be able to start the Bumptop Desktop. I have had to actually quit the program from memory in order to start the desktop interface.
Is there a setting that will allow Bumptop to start if it is already running in another mode.
Thanx
