We have had a couple of other reports of this same issue, and we are looking into why this happens (so far only 10.4 users have reported it).
We have also heard back from a couple of users who said that after a could of hours this issue cleared up or that a restart of the computer fixed it.
There are is also a set of manual steps that you can go through to re-enable the dock icon for RescueTime.
Here are the steps:
1. Navigate to your Applications folder and right-click on the RescueTime.app and select "Show Package Contents".
2. This should open a folder that contains a "Contents" folder, open that folder and you should see a list of folders and files including "Info.plist"
3. Double click on Info.plist to open it - it should open with the Property List Editor by default
4. Click the triangle next to "Root" and it should display the contents of the Info.plist file.
5. The setting we are interested in is called "LSUIElement". To unhide the dock icon set this value to "0" or to hide the dock icon you can set it to "1"
6. Close the Property List Editor and save the changes
7. Changes to the info.plist require that RescueTime be restarted to take effect, if you are not able to access the RescueTime menu, the easiest way to do this is by restarting your computer, or you can follow the steps below:
You can also quit RescueTime by doing the following:
1. Navigate to your Applications and then the Utilities folder
2. Run the Activity Monitor.app
3. By default Activity Monitor will run and only show an icon in your Dock Menu, double click the Activity Monitor icon from your Dock
4. You should see a list of running processes, you may need to click on the "Process Name" column header so sort processes by name
5. Scroll until you find the RescueTime process, select it, and click the "Quit Process" icon at the top of the screen. This should force quit RescueTime
Julie reported a problem in RescueTime on May 10, 2008 15:09:
Can't access the application when "hide dock icon" enabledI'm using Mac OS 10.4.11. I downloaded RescueTime, installed it, and it was working fine. Then I saw a preference that said "Hide Dock Item," which I clicked, relaunched the application, and now I can't access it. I have a RescueTime menu item on my menu bar, but I can't click it (as I could when I had a dock icon). RescueTime doesn't show up in my application list or my force-quit list. Besides the menu icon (that I can't click), I'd have no way of knowing the program was even open.
Help! How do I undo this, or at least get the menu icon to work?
Thanks,
Julie
