Yeah, a widget could make sense here. The only challenge is in the search terms -- I'm just getting the data via RSS, so the data's only as good as what I get from the gov'ment. If you're Apple, and you want to let people know when the iPhone has a recall, having a search for iPhone would work pretty well. But if your model number is "KAD-1241," that wouldn't (with the current engine) match "KAD1241," so I guess it depends on how accurate the releases from the government are. I'm with ya, though.
As for affiliate marketing, that's what the big white rectangle is for ;)
That said, this isn't so much intended to be a business as it is to be a useful tool that might make sense for more paranoid types of people. I did it in a week, more for karma than for anything else, but getting some hosting dollars out of it would be nice ;) – M. Jackson Wilkinson, on October 06, 2008 15:07

This is what I think about all day so... heh...
What if you made a widget that e-commerce sites could stick next on their product pages. It could say something like "Wanna know if a product like this gets recalled? Enter your e-mail info here."
For a biz model, you could do some type of affiliate marketing. If someone enters infant formula, you could sell them something related.

And to some extent, it doesn't need to be super-specific. Entering "infant" or "child' might make sense for a new parent, and would catch a lot, but that might not be a bad thing. If you own a car, you might want to watch your car model.
I should make some better suggestions on the main alerts page...

I think it's more relevant for the food and drug products that you might use on a regular basis, or for paranoid parents of small children -- that eye contact solution you use every day may have a recall, or your infant's formula may as well, and those are things you might want to know about.
But yeah, it's definitely a "set it and forget it" type of thing.

Cool but... Don't wanna take the time to enter all the stuff I buyI think the idea of the site is interesting but I don't know if I'd use it. It'd take time to think of the things I'd use that I'd want to add plus I'm not sure I'd know what to add.
This seems like it'd be a great feature that Amazon.com could integrate into their site. I'd be surprised if they don't do it already.
How do you expect people to use it? Is this the kind of thing where you set it and forget it? Is it the kind of thing where I'm constantly interacting with it adding the new stuff that I buy?
Maybe for me in this case... I'm more of an "ignorance is bliss" kind of guy.
Thanks for letting me play with the beta!

thanks for posting the question. moderating comments currently isn't available. if you can e-mail me your widget id or WID, i'll work with tech support to disable comments, if that works. - justin@clearspring.com

Neham, I see that the three images are overlapping which is fine.
I'd just put an absolute constraint around them so that the layout doesn't change when you change the size of the window.
What's happen is that the link that FB brings up is BIG and messes up how things look.
So... use CSS and a div tag to say that the html of the widget can only be a certain size.
