I had this problem with my TT930 and I placed a support call on it.
Turns out that to activate the speech to text feature, you have to activate an easter egg.
Basically, select navigate by address and select the country/state BEFORE entering the city name. The country or state is selected by clicking on the button that looks like a tiny flag on the right side of the data entry window (I thought it was just a decorative border) which brings up a list of countries and states.

The TomTom Home installer is also on the TomTom itself. You can connect it to your computer with a USB cable, answer yes to connect to your computer, and when the TomTom is mounted as a flash drive, you'll find the installer on the flash drive. It's a good idea to run chkdsk (Windows) or disk utility's repair disk (MacOSX) on the TomTom while it's plugged in and remember to eject the flash drive before unplugging the TomTom, otherwise, the filesystem may be corrupted resulting in either sporadic reboots or just plain not working.
When you buy the unit and enter the activation code, it gives you something like one, two or three months during which you can download the latest maps for free. If you've never used your TomTom Home in the three years that you've had your TomTom, you might want to try entering the activation code in the TomTom Home to see if it will let you download the latest maps.

JW replied on January 06, 2009 21:43 to the question "LOST SATELLITE SIGNAL" in Tom Tom:
My TT930 stopped receiving satellite signals while I was on a trip. It was working fine, then after a stop when I turned it back on to continue, no signal. Followed the FAQ procedures and nothing, called support, they pointed me back to the FAQ, I told them I already did that so they started walking me through the FAQ, I humored them and did all the steps again and still nothing. The unit is now going back on a RMA.-

This happened to me early on with my TT930. TT customer service had me flash the firmware and reload the application but neither helped however if I reloaded the map then all was well. Of course, you'll need your computer to see it as a flash disk before the TomTom Home can reload the map. I had to jump between a Mac and a XP box, running the flash utility till I could get to the stage where I could reload the map.

JW replied on January 06, 2009 04:47 to the question "How do I fix this TomTom??!?" in Tom Tom:
My TomTom 930 tended to reboot a lot too. What I found was that if I periodically ran a chkdsk (Windows) or a repair disk (MacOSX) on it when it was connected to the laptop, it would fix a bunch of problems with the filesystem and then the TomTom wouldn't reboot for a while.
I have plenty of other concerns with my 930, rebooting just isn't one of them now that I know the reboots are from corrupted filesystems.
