Why not just start a blog?
It's easy enough to set up a free account. Set the permissions so that all your new posts are private, so it's all "for your eyes only". Then have Jott or Twitter send a message to your blog site, and they create a new blog post for you. Presto, a mileage log.
I know this is possible through Jott. Even now, updating a blog is free. (See http://jott.com/jott/jott-links.html You get 15 seconds of speaking time.) I'm not sure how to post to a blog from Twitter or SMS. But there should be something available.
Doing a quick search, I found BlogIt, letmeparty.com/, and http://textu.org/for-blogs/text-me-bo... that make posts via SMS.

Matt,
Sorry for the late response. Saying "the at sign" should work, but if it doesn't, can you file a bug here?

Thank you!

I heard that they're actively working on this. From what I understand, there are two parts to this. 1) enabling Sandy to use one line to create and update a list, and 2) enabling Sandy to recognize a few keywords.
For example, on Twitter, you should be able to create and update a list by putting multiple asterisks on the same line. For Jott, Sandy should recognize a few keywords instead of the asterisks. ("add", "remove", "and", etc.)
Something like this for Twitter
> d s r list groceries * butter * eggs * milk
> d s u #1 * yogurt -* milk
For Jott
> remember groceries list. add butter and eggs and milk
There is also some talk about having Sandy recognize list names such as "Groceries" or "Trader Joes". This would allow you to update a list without looking it up first.
> update #trader joe's list. add case of 2 buck chuck for the party-

I finally got my number to work, even without quotes. Apparently it wasn't an issue with the number, but rather the text preceding it. I was including a county name, and I had it capitalized. So either the capitalization was the issue, or Sandy recognized the county name, and treated it like a contact.
Actually, I tested your number without quotes, and that worked as well. – Keith B, on June 30, 2008 23:05

Well, I just asked Sandy to:
remember This is my ff number "990878234230952058" @reply
(ok the number may be a bit too long) and the funny thing is Sandy actually created an item with just the number alone as the title. But it wasn't a contact type item. – norbiq, on June 30, 2008 21:43

This doesn't seem to be the solution. I am having the same problem. Tried putting quotation marks (both single and double) around the number, but Sandy still treats it like a phone number.
Seems like it would helpful to have a "@note" tag that could explicitly tell Sandy when a message is a note? – Keith B, on June 30, 2008 21:27-

Hi Jerimiah,
I am a total newbie to Sandy, but yes, I am pretty sure she can do this. You have to check the "yes" box on the Calendar subscription, Private iCalendar feed section, on your settings page. Sandy will then list an address for your calendar feed, which you can add to your Google calendar. Worked for me.
HTH.
