So now that you have the style guide, someone has gone and removed all the location appellations from Starbucks in Seattle. But texting @ Starbucks to Foursquare doesn't check you in to the correct venue. So how's about explaining exactly how we're supposed to check in to a venue via SMS now? Are we supposed to tack on the address with a * character or something? Help. If you can edit venues (mayors and super users), there's a "style guide" popup.

1. For chains or venues with multiple locations, you no longer need to add a location suffix. So "Starbucks" or "Apple Store" is fine (instead of "Starbucks - Queen Anne" or "Apple Store - Uptown").



2. When possible stick with abbreviations: "Ave" instead of "Avenue", "St" instead "Street", etc



3. Cross Street should be like one of the following:
   
   • at Main St (for venues on a corner)
   
   
   • btw 2nd & 3rd Ave (for venues in the middle of a block)



4. Cross Street should not repeat the name of the street in the address.

The short version is, it doesn't work for SMS or mobile web. I just tried it out.

The new style guide where we aren't supposed to give locations in names doesn't work out so well in practice.

If a person is using an Android app (and I assume the iPhone app), the app geo-locates and shows nearby venues so it works decently there.

But checking in via text message is totally hosed that way.

And checking in via mobile web when doing that can bring up too many venues so the one you want doesn't get shown, so that's often hosed in the case of Starbucks or similar venues.

The Foursquare database can handle duplicate venue names now, but it can't check people in correctly.

FYI, I decided to solve the issue myself by writing a wordpress plugin to do this. It's not done yet, but it's only a couple of days away.

Below is the current output from my latest code. Right now, there are three things left to do: get final page counts from Amazon, prettify the formatting, and build the wordpress hooks rather than hardcode things like bkkeepr user name.
