I ended up resolving the issue last night. I saw somewhere in the fixes being released in Songbird 1.1 that they will be more specific in the error message with the GStreamer failure. They would clarify that Songbird requires Quicktime to be installed in order to play .m4a files.

Like you, I don't want to install any apple on my PC, so I found Quicktime Lite (Or Alternative if you want an actual player and not just the codecs). You can get QT Lite here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Q...

I'm having the same issue on Vista 64-bit w/ Songbird 1.0. I don't have quicktime or itunes installed. I'm currently using the Quicktime Playback plugin.
