That's the email confirmation from GetSatisfaction, not a response from BrightKite. Everyone gets that when they sign up here. – Richard John, on September 09, 2008 10:45

Although I can see how this new system works for many, it still doesn't work for me or anyone dealing with a mixed-use development with one street address. In my case I live in a large building with retail and restaurants on the ground level. I'd like to be able to check in publicly to a restaurant or gallery but not my actual residence. If we had actual private placemarks, this would work fine. Unfortunately, the setting of one (my residence) overrides another (a store) because we share the same address. I really hope this will be resolved in the future. This would seem a potential hassle for many folks. Thanks for taking the concept this far.
I would still really, really love to be able to toggle the Twitter feed easily *without* having to go into private mode. I don't actually care whether anyone knows where I live; I just don't want it pushed to Twitter every time I return home and dutifully check in. I also may go somewhere like a grocery store where I'd like to check in publicly but don't think the Twitterverse would care. In a perfect BK world, activity at certain placemarks could also be designated as being fed (or not) to Twitter (and perhaps future services), independent of privacy settings.

Balaji, we are definitely considering users like yourself in regards to this feature. We will make sure that you are able to pull this data across all of the interfaces and not just using SMS or mobile email. :) – Lesley, on August 21, 2008 22:05

i want to be able to go to my Windows Mobile Brightkite app (a native app), and have it guess the vicinity for me.
if it's near a placemark, ask me--"you're close to [placemark name]", want to check in?
if it's not, give a general area name, and ask to check in
if that's not what we want, fall back to a normal search (however you want to implement)
i haven't messed with the Google API, let alone know if there's one for the mobile app, but the hoi polloi may be able to come up with this, now that i think about it--but i'd appreciate it more if it came from brightkite ;-)

Request for Brightkite developers - please consider other options for your international users as well.
For example, sending @FE via text or mobile email might seem like a good answer for your US users. But living in Asia, neither of those really works on a long term basis.
I understand that it's difficult for you to poll FE and am willing to put up with the hassle of having to update BK separately to pick up FE data. But please give us an option via the mobile site as well! – Balaji Dutt M V, on August 21, 2008 02:53

jaxb, 1) we were not made aware of this when we set up the number, so we are trying to resolve this. 2) We assure you that this number was not set up on the fly as a response to Twitter, we spent weeks setting everything up, the timing was mere coincidence. :) – Lesley, on August 20, 2008 15:48

Agreeing with jaxb on reception of sms updates. If removal of that functionality wasn't important to us, neither jaxb nor I would be here right now! – notsheep, on August 20, 2008 12:45

think that most ppl I know use the sms to receive updates - don't think that should be underestimated at all. – jaxb, on August 20, 2008 12:21

OK, so maybe the Isle of Mann thing was a bit of an oversight. And yes, good to rectify it at this early stage if possible. However, in your defence, I've been using the Twitter UK number for about a year and a half now, and didn't realise until I read this thread that the texts are only included in my allowance because I'm on O2! So an easy mistake to make for a UK-based person, no matter US-based.
Also, would just echo the sentiments of @jaxb and suggest you make sure that it's feasible and you're not going to have to close down the number in a year or two's time. Having said that, I reckon the Twitter thing was quite a storm in a teacup - most people I've spoken to largely use Twitter's SMS number for updating their status, rather than receiving updates, and I suspect it will be the same for BrightKite. But just a watchout.
A comment on the question "UK SMS??" in Brightkite:
I am concerned 1) that I'm being charged for this although I'm in the UK - as with twitter this number ranks outside my calling plan and I get charged international rates 2) that this has been introduced so suddenly following twitters UK sms demise that this isn't planned or supported and will disappear just as suddenly. is there a long term plan to support sending SMS - especially given there don't appear to be any limits on how many can be sent? – jaxb, on August 20, 2008 10:45
