There really is a need for some kind of custom category. I would suggest that there is no need for added complexity: allow manual input only. No scanning or other "product lookup" features, just let the items be simple database-only items.

I really really really like the idea behind DM, and I think the implementation is truly awesome. However, if I can't logically catalog everything (like the china and flatware, or the furniture), the value is lost. Surely there must be a simple solution.
