So far, I'm asking students to post reflections and what they learned in class, on the internet, or on the wiki. I'm stoked that they are so excited about using the wiki, but I'm getting a lot of comments left by students like, "yo what's up," "hi girlfriend what are you doing," etc. I'm glad they are using it, and I want to encourage it as much as possible, but I'm wondering if it is getting too conversation-y. Any other teachers have similar thoughts???

I am an elemetary school librarian. I use wikis to share information about book lists, such as those with examples of figurative language, great opening papagraphs, good to teach inference, etc. I start the lists and then teachers can add to them or I add books as I find them.

I also have a wiki to publish podcasts of book reviews that students write and video.

I also set up a wiki for all the librarians in our district so we can share info, have a central location for lists, addresses, fixes for software problems, etc.

I also use wikis as sources of handouts, resource lists, and other information that participants need during workshops. Participants like being able to access the info at home after the workshop.

My wiki site is the HUB of my library! It's linked to the main website (or will be, once I revamp it this summer). It's where I collect all my resource links. ALL of my pathfinders are wikis; I have a separate administrator code, but also a student code so they can get it and add resources. It makes for some good discussions about good/bad sites, etc.

I used a wiki in the last library I worked at. I used it to keep track of my frequently ordered supplies, my policies and procedures for item checkouts, my stats, even for tracking my renegade patrons.

I am in library school right now, and I just started using pbwiki in one of my classes. I currently work in a library, and I am thinking about creating a wiki for my department. Anyone have any ideas on what types of things would be helpful on a department wiki? P.S. I work in circulation.

Sinful Seven Layer Bars
Melt 1 stick of margarine in a 9x12 pan, stir in 1 tsp. vanilla.
Mix 1 Tbsp. flour into 1 1/2 c. Graham Cracker crumbs, sprinkle evenly over the melted mixture and pat into a crust. Layer on a cup of each of the following: flaked coconut, butterscotch chips, and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Pour a can of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk over all (it;s the 'glue'). Sprinkle one cup of chopped pecans over all. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes until the top is pale golden brown. Cool thoroughly, cut into small squares, store or gorge.

I have thought about having students create individual pages however, I like that the students can read other students posts. I think that it encourages students to take their time and think about what they are going to say before they post.

I give students a week to post their answers before we discuss it in class. Students have readily posted when they feel strongly about something so it really depends on the topic. There are always a few who wait until the last second.

Hi Kori,

That's an interesting approach - have you found that your students readily answer the questions, or do they wait for others to post first? I like how they individualize their answers in color.

I've noticed a bunch of teachers who encourage their students to create a personal wiki page and respond to assignments on that page.
