The windows team just got a new boss and their new policy re-defines what the terms mean, it's not the correct meaning of beta but that's how they use it, check online and you'll see that they themselves have announced that change.

    Beta: "API complete"
    RC: "Feature complete"

(Note that this is actually quite similar to what Google uses...)

They also planned to only release a single official beta version, and a single RC version, that's not the normal way to do it either, they've overhauled a lot of the dev cycle, it's a result of the complete meltdown halfway through Vista's development.

It's a lot quicker now mostly because there is a set API set in place early, and then each element that adds into that is done by a different group of people, basically it's a bit like multithreading on a CPU, they had some of that in the past but if one part didn't quite fit the rest they had to go back and modify them, the advantage of this method is a lot quicker releases and what is released in pre RTM builds is final code, it's just missing those parts not yet done. The disadvantage is that it's less flexible, there is less time for testing and there is less ways to influence the overall structure once the API is set.

I'm allergic to bugzilla but I'll give it a try...

Windows 7 is not beta it's "beta" (beta doesn't mean what you think for MS, it means API complete) builds since the beta going into RC now just polish various UI bits, like more wallpapers, different icons etc.

The crashing bug happens on x64 vista also, and all other issues aren't related to the OS either.

KriLL3 reported a problem in Participatory Culture Foundation (Miro) on April 09, 2009 17:32:

    KriLL3
Network folder amnesia, crash on close, slow load, hotkeys, menu.
My laundry list of bugs and improvements:

Miro forgets the content of any watched folder if it's unavailable on load or refresh of channels, if it's available again all the content is marked as unwatched, a bit annoying when the bulk of your content is on a NAS, get 3000~ unwatched entries every third~ time i start miro. The files are added to a database, why not extend that to remember files even if they're not available on each refresh?

Miro crashes on close without fail (Win7 x64 7000beta-7077rc).

Miro takes a couple of minutes to start, it's slowly using more and more ram before that, and when it hits 70-80mb the window appears.

Takes 2-5 seconds for video & audio to appear when playing HD content, but the player doesn't wait for output to start, thus when it appears you're a couple of seconds into the video, and need to rewind back to 0 if you want to see the start.

In fullscreen mode the player and the controls aren't treated as a single window, they were in an earlier nightly but no longer, means software that moves windows between screens etc only moves one or the other depending on which has focus, most of the time being the video, thus hit the key to move it to another screen and the controls are left behind.

There should be hotkeys for the player, include the universal media keys and we can use our media key equipped keyboards, remotes etc, customizable hotkeys are preferable.

Miro is currently eating volume commands from keyboards, annoying since you need to give something else focus to change the volume.

Would be nice if the main menu (File, Sidebar etc) was by default hidden in Vista/7 and shows while holding alt, mimics native application behavior.

KriLL3 shared an idea in Songbird on February 18, 2009 13:23:

    KriLL3
OS integration: Hide the menubar in Vista & 7
By default vista/7 applications hide the the menubar until you hit <alt> and it hides again if you focus outside the bar, Songbird would look better next to other vista/7 applications if it did the same.</alt>

    KriLL3
Doesn't show up in "Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs" in Windows Vista/7 Either, and in 1.0 you can't even manually assign files to open in Songbird, some claim that 1.1 has fixed that but so far I can't get it to stick, it's in the list but when I set it as default opening the same prompt layer shows VLC being the default yet again. :\
