I think that's a fair idea -- but I'd also like to add the suggestion that subtitles be automatically downloaded as soon as a video is recognised by boxee, if none are present. IOW: a global system option would be either auto-start on/off, along with a list to choose default language(s), and ideally a more comprehensive font (size/typeface/location/background masking color/transparency) settings.-

A comment on the problem "suspend ?!?" in boxee:
Apple Frontrow stops the video output, the hard drive and goes into low power mode. Boxee should at least be able to follow suit and do the same -- if not, why have the menu option at all? – krzystoff, on May 18, 2009 13:47

form-filling no longer working in firefoxI updated firefox to the newest version, now the form-filling doesn't remember what I typed in earlier sessions, even though Saved Form information is set to be saved, along with all the history and browsing?!?-

A comment on the idea "Menu-wrapping navigation browsing (jump from bottom to top and vice versa)" in boxee:
many other media player devices use cyclic navigation, NMT/tivx/majority of mobile devices.
an alternative approach could combine both the cycling and the hard edge -- scroll down to the end and press down again to jump back to the top.
it could also be an option if you feel it's less confusing. – krzystoff, on May 10, 2009 08:55
Jason Murray's reply to "Menu-wrapping navigation browsing (jump from bottom to top and vice versa)" was just promoted to the most useful! krzystoff and 2 other people think it's one of the best replies.
I understand your reasons for this, but from general experience and whats sitting within my line of sight at the moment:
- DVD menu systems have cyclic navigation
- Windows Media Centre has cyclic navigation
- Sony Bravia TV menus have cyclic navigation
- Pioneer DVD player system menus have cyclic navigation
- Apple TV does NOT have cyclic navigation
In terms of what consumers are used to, I think cyclic navigation wins out.
I'd counter your "run to and be safe" assertion with "contrary to expected behaviour and confusing".
A comment on the idea "Navigation suggestions" in boxee:
sorry gkamin, I appreciate the challenges here for you guys -- but pointing us at a 'user guide' is pretty much a complete cop-out (CBFd).
as an example, my daughter worked out for herself how to operate her ipod touch, before she was 18mths old (the older ipods are a little more challenging); at 24mths old she could use the appleTV (which we bought for her videos); now, at 33mths she still can't operate boxee at all -- she's still too young to read, of course.
if it's any consolation my wife can't figure out most of the boxee functions, or can't be bothered; but to expect users to read an instruction manual is wholy unrealistic.
it seems boxee has taken a backward step from XBMC, albeit given a far simpler remote to work with.
the raison d'être ipod's success is 99% due the simple interface -- it achieves so much with so few buttons -- ATV isn't nearly so fluid but boxee certainly has a way to go before it matches their intuitive layout. – krzystoff, on May 10, 2009 08:43
krzystoff replied on May 10, 2009 08:12 to the idea "main screen customization" in boxee:
this is an essential ingredient for the interface, (particularly given boxee's current userbase demographic, and it's XMBC heritage). customising should be included along with downloadable skins, (to simplify the feature for non-technical users).
that said, it's something that could wait until ~1.0.0 release, since there are clearly more pressing fundamental issues with the system.
my preference would be an icon-based, smartphone widget-style appearance, as opposed to the bland folder-tree-style text interface currently used.
