Thanks Lesley. I was just curious to know how things were progressing. Really looking forward to SMS updates (would they be free to receive but cost to send - like Twitter? A UK number would be sweet. Twitter use a UK number for most countries.
If BK are looking for a gateway, I'd recommend txtlocal. Incoming SMS is free on a shared number, or £35 a month on a dedicated number. Outgoing SMS is fairly cheap as well (depending on how many you purchase).

Guy, we understand that this is frustrating. We are working on getting things in place so that we can support SMS internationally, but unfortunately we cannot give you an ETA at this time. In the meantime, you can text commands to your @bkite.com email listed in your mobile settings page.

A rest-of-the-world SMS number is definitely needed. With you using a US shortcode there's no way anyone outside N America can update via text, which not only limits your userbase but just kinda looks like you're neglecting everyone else.

I know it's not quite the solution some people want, but I was hankering after a UK-SMS number since I joined BrightKite... but now the iPhone version of the site is pretty much ideal.

Not much use to those without an iPhone, granted, but if you DO own one, seriously, check out the new site.

I'm having a similar problem to La Bete. I have sent numerous check-ins from various places by email using MMS, and only three have gone through. Without being able to accept incoming email on my phone (short of me paying extraordinary prices to do so, which I'm not prepared to do), it is near on impossible to use this service effectively in Australia.

Please provide a UK number that the rest of the world can utilise - OR do what Twittervision do, and leverage off of the Twitter platform by recognising certain tags within tweets ("L:" = start of location, and optionally ":" to end the location).

The most annoying thing for me is that I can update via MMS, but I don't get replies. I therefore have no way of knowing if the address I entered was accepted or not.
