learn10 admin replied on June 10, 2009 19:21 to the problem "Mistakes found in Mandarin Chinese" in Learn10:
Please, please, please give specific examples. Our translations were undertaken by professional human translators. It is possible that mistakes were made, but if an error is spotted it can be fixed immediately. We are dependent on your specific feedback.
I am very concerned to hear that you have seen multiple errors. With many reports we have identified that noting the grammatical type of the word sorts things out.

Specific examples of strange translations would be very useful.
I will ask our professional translator/Czech teacher about stejně used as a pronoun. As we say elsewhere - our translations are human powered. It's possible for humans to make errors, however please be aware that a meaning you have learned may not be the only meaning used by speakers of another language. This is why we provide live examples of the words in use from Twitter.
Thanks!

learn10 admin replied on April 30, 2009 06:52 to the problem "No e-mail lists" in Learn10:
We had a break from the daily emails for a few days while we took a hard look at our databases. We needed to work out why there were not always 10 words sent out in every language and were concerned that there could have been a systemic problem.
As soon as we identified the problem - extra lines on the database - we were able to start sending emails again.
Thanks for your patience.
learn10 admin replied on April 30, 2009 06:49 to the problem "Incorrect romanization of Japanese text" in Learn10:
Hello,
We have made the corrections to the romanized spellings you suggested.
I am worried that you have seen more than one error with the westernised spellings of Japanese words. I have therefore asked the translator to take another look at the word list. If you have any other examples, I would be really grateful if you could let me know.
Many thank.
learn10 admin replied on April 30, 2009 06:30 to the praise "The Danish version of this page is incomprehensible, how can i help?" in Learn10:
We are really grateful for your offer of help.
As you probably understand, without funding we don't have a lot of choices about the way the interface and site is translated - we decided that on the interface we would use an auto translate - in preference to showing text only in English. We have tried to make text on the interface as simple as possible so that it had the best chance of being understandable. We are aware that this can be far from perfect.
Our next step is to organise a system where we can produce multiple language versions of the interface and site, so that we can accept offers of help from volunteers. This is a high priority for us - however we still need the programming time design and build a system.
I'll post an update as soon as I have more news.
Many thanks!
learn10 admin replied on April 27, 2009 15:41 to the idea "Phonetic Spelling" in Learn10:
We would love to add phonetic spelling of Arabic.
To do this, we simply need to find a sponsor for Arabic - someone who can pay for a premium subscription for Learn10 for 2 years.
Or a group of people or organisation or school willing to sponsor the language... or volunteers.
In the mean time, we will be adding sounds to this language as soon as possible and at least the Arabic version can help those revising Arabic or learning English.
We hope we will have transliteration in Arabic soon.
Thanks!

learn10 admin replied on April 22, 2009 07:59 to the idea "Maltese" in Learn10:
Hi Geert,
We would love to add Maltese - as well as many other languages.
The two ways in which languages can be added are via the efforts of volunteers (though unfortunately no volunteer has yet completed the task of translating the 1500 words on the database) or by finding a sponsor for the language pair. If we can find a sponsor who is willing to purchase a 2 year premium subscription to Learn10 we can add Maltese (or any other language pair).
Many thanks for your idea.

You can now use our set of how-to videos. These will talk you through our system and how to register. You can find the videos on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/learn1o
We will also soon be working on the layout of the site to make things more understandable. Please bear with us while we sort this out. Many thanks for alerting us to your difficulties.
I hope the videos help you.
learn10 admin replied on April 22, 2009 07:50 to the question "German to Italian not possible?" in Learn10:
All languages are currently paired with English.
We can add German with Italian if we can find a sponsor for the language pair. The cost would be 200 USD which would allow us to have the translation checked by a professional translator. The fee would include a two year premium subscription to Learn10. Please let me know if you're interested in becoming a sponsor for this language pair.
Many thanks!
learn10 admin replied on April 20, 2009 12:43 to the problem "Major UI Boo-boos" in Learn10:
Hello Salman,
When we have funding... we will employ the services of an interface designer... when we have funding...
In the mean time we are working hard to make the Learn10 system the best it can be. Thanks for spotting the problem with the tag cloud, and 'skin' on the API page, we'll fix it.
We chose 10 words because this is an achievable, if ambitious, target.
We provide materials to suit many different learning styles, and premium subscribers can utilise our phased learning system.
If learners remember 3 or 7 new words every day from our list, I think that's a great start, and If you know three of the words on the list already... that leaves you with seven to learn!
Many thanks for your feedback.

learn10 admin replied on April 20, 2009 12:21 to the question "What is a widget?" in Learn10:
Hi Mak,
A widget is a little computer programme that sits on the Internet. Here's a link to the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_widget
We believe that in order for you to quickly develop a durable learning habit, the information you want to learn should be available in many places, as a natural part of your daily routine. We therefore created a widget which can be placed on any web page. You can find it on our site (http://learn10.com), and on Facebook too: http://tr.im/hGGj. If you have an iPhone or other smart phone you can visit http://m.learn10.com to learn on the go.
You don't need to install anything, but you do need to register for an account so that we know which language you are learning and can send you your daily email.
We have just produced some (rough) how-to videos to get you started. You can see them here:http://tr.im/j2DZ
Hope this helps!
Nicola
