A comment on the question "Is there an iPhone Application planned for future release?" in Ping.fm:
joe user would use ping.fm because it is the one that updates all of them. While there are benefits to an open platform, not all of the sites Ping works with are open either, APIs provide reasonably good interoperability including to Ping's service itself. So I would think an ambitious coder could already get to work on something, but personally I'm looking forward to the "official" app. "One Ping to rule them all!" – radione, on August 06, 2008 00:49

I say develop an open source in house version that can be extended by other programmers. The only way this product will be able to compete long term is to make it the best one out there.
I expect the large social networking sites as well as Twitter will be incorporating many of these features into their apps.
Why would joe user use ping.fm when he can use Facebooks built in functionality.
The future lies in getting all these different platforms to work together in as many ways possible, If you guys can work with open standards that facilitate this and develop the best product then your future looks bright.
From what I have seen so far you are well on your way... The iPhone being a glaring omission to this of course...

Take as long as you want... But know that the first company to bring this functionality to market will most likely be the industry leader. That is the nature of business.
Unless Facebook decides to integrate this functionality into their API and then they will be the market leader based on sheer number of installed users.

Chris Pirillo (www.chris.pirillo.com) mentioned to those in the ping.fm irc once that someone emailed him telling him that they were making an iphone app for it.

It is a "Web Application." An actual applciation ON THE PHONE would drop the required time to download the Ping website data all together. It would be stored in the app. Somtimes even Ping mobile takes a few seconds, as much as 15 to 20 seconds to load over edge and 3G..
Not to mention, with a Ping iPhone App, they could also introduce the abilty to attach photos to upload rather than having to email them from the iphone.
They could also introduce Location Based Services to communicate our location to services like Bright Kite and Twitter.
There are a few other features they could do with an iPhone App that CANT BE DONE with a Web App
