Thanks for these. I've voided the vitaly21 question on the basis of inaccurate odds and am investigating his/her account for potential gaming. If we find cause for concern, the user will be added to our watch list.

I think that all we can do with these types of questions right now is keep flagging and voiding them, and keep an eye on the would-be gamers.

The rules are going to be updated shortly such that any questions which are essentially the same but with dates only marginally different will be voided. So please do flag them whenever you come across them.

Thanks for your help with this.

OK, this has been suspended for almost 24 hrs and there is still no consensus on the best way to settle it. (1 void now, 1 leave it to the BBC and then void, 1 it doesn't matter). I'm currently leaning towards re-opening and leaving it until after Thursday to see if any independent figures are released (chances are pretty slim, but you never know). I'll give it another hour or so if anyone else wants to comment.

    Thanks

I can see this would be a problem Truthwrangler. Thanks for flagging it. Could you post the link to some of these questions - I've had a quick look but can't find them - and I'll look into it.

Hi jennieand boys - thanks for your input on this one. You're right about the power user vetting (See my reply below to destry & anaverage). Automated generation of questions would be a little tricky technically I suspect, but I think that as everyone gets more familiar with question creation, with the user vetting and the ability for creators to edit their questions after they've been posted, these problems should resolve themselves.

On your short term solution comments, your C) comment is a good point - I'm suggesting that we give it 12 hours from the suspend time and if no consensus has been reached, then we void it. What do you think?

I'll suggest the separate tab for questions requiring clarification to Tom, the Product Manager. Good suggestion.

Thanks again for your input, it is appreciated!

Thanks for your comments Destry and Anaverageamerican. You're absolutely right about ceding question approval rights to users. Power User vetting and Power User settlement have always been in the plan for Hubdub (since it was just a sketch on our kitchen table!). It is the only way we can hope to keep up with the growing number of questions. But it's going to take a little more time to implement it.

Assuming all goes to plan, the Power User vetting will be with us in a month which will help enomously in flushing out problem questions. Clearly, we couldn't have implemented it before now as we are ALL learning what makes a good and easily settleable question, and we are also learning what makes a good power user.

As you know only too well, the last week has thrown up a significant number of problem questions, all of which will be referred to as case examples by cat editors and future power users alike. So although it's been painful, it's also been incredibly useful.

Thanks again for helping us to make Hubdub better. We really appreciate your suggestions.

    Hi jennieand boys

I agree with you that the similarities of certain questions is pretty annoying (I'm very "J" on the myers-briggs scale - if you know it - and so like everything tidy!). We implemented an auto Search function on question creation to find potential duplicates, which has helped a little, but obviously there are still problems.

It's good to flag this to the "power" users so that we're all aware of it and once user vetting comes in, it will hopefully make a difference.

Thanks for flagging it. And I'm so pleased you're enjoying the site despite our teething problems!

Tibetan violence - which source to use, or void?
    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/By_Mar...

There is an issue with whether we go with the Chinese-backed Tibetan government or the exiled Tibetan Government figures or hope vaguely for some objective independent body being able to gain access to the country.

    The options seem to be:
    - go with the "official" government figures
    - go with the exiled government figures
    - hope that the BBC reports a figure that they believe to be accurate, and if they continue to quote conflicting figures, void it on March 20th
    - void it now

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this before a decision is made. I'm going to suspend the question for 24 hours, post it to www.getsatisfaction.com/hubdub and try to get a quick decision on this.

    Hi 4D

I just want to confirm that none of the Category Editors use more than one account on Hubdub. Perhaps the confusion has come from the fact that we have an account name and sign ourselves off as our real name, for example, my Hubdub account name is slummymummy but I sign it off as "Lesley, Hubdub Category Manager". (and use "Lesley" on getsatisfaction).

I have checked and there is an account name called "Ryan" in Hubdub but this does not belong to Hubdub Ryan. There is also one called "Doctor" and neither does that.

Clearly, there is some confusion there, and we are ensuring that functionality will be released shortly to change all Hubdub Staff accounts to their real names and to flag them as Hubdub Staff. We completely understand that users need to have complete clarity of who is who.

I hope this goes some way to reassuring users of our integrity but realise there is more we need to (and will) do.

    Hi TruthWrangler

Sorry for the delay in responding. It's been one of those weeks....

I have responded to infernalmachine above and just to re-iterate here, I'll propose that we add the rule around this to the weather section of the Hubdub Rules and we should all look out for these tricky questions in future and either amend or void them as necessary.

    Thanks for your input.

    All the best

    Hi Infernal

Thanks for your response. I just wanted to clarify that Voided questions CANNOT be unvoided. I assume the politics question you are refering to is:

    http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_t...

If you look in the Settlement Details tab on that question you can see that it's been Suspended and subsequently Unsuspended, but not Voided/Unvoided. We don't have that functionality anywhere in the site. Although we are looking into it.

On the other issue, you are right that the problem was getting the Snowfall for the single day up until 6pm, without someone sitting watching the Weather site and taking a screenshot of the update nearest 6pm.

I will suggest it as a change to the weather rules, and we will look out for future such weather questions and either amend or void as necessary.

    Thanks again for your input.

    Best regards

    Lesley.

I don't understand why people are so offended by death. In no way are we making the death occur sooner, if anything we are making people aware about pancreatic cancer and therefore maybe saving a life. News is not all about puppy dogs and lollipops. I have been in situations where I have had to face the question of taking someone off life support and never did I worry about the company I was going to keep. If you don't like the question simply don't wager on it.
If the story will make news headlines then it is something we should be able to forecast on. Whether that is how many abortions will take place in 2008 or how many soldiers die in war this month, it is opening our eyes to the news events around the world, and once we are aware of the news we can take our own small steps to do what we think is right. You don't like something going on in the political world, then show up and vote, you don't like a company sponsoring a television show, then don't buy that product or watch that show. So if you don't like the questions don't wager on them.
I have alot of money on Nigel living so Nigel if you are reading this please stay away from elevator shafts. I am not sure about jerjustrolling, he might try and push you down one to move up the leaderboard.
Freedom is a tough acto to balance, being able to say what you want, but not allowed to scream fire in movie theater, it is all about the fine lines in the sand. The courts constantly addressing these issues and with our availability to immediate access to news around the world, we have to be aware of when we cross that line. I like to error on the side of too much speech instead of limiting freedom.

    Hi Truthwrangler

I agree with all your points regarding the clarification of the question. I can see that the meaning of the question was indeed clarified through the user comments. And while I can understand that Diana voided it because the question as it stood wasn't clear, you are right in saying that it was resolved through the comments, and the only sensible meaning should have been taken, i.e. at least 10 inches of snow (not accumulated). With this in mind, I agree that it should not have been voided, at least not without some further discussion with the users, and you have my apologies for that.

However, unless I am not seeing the correct information on the link that you sent me, I can only see "Snow - 10.8inches/27.43cms". Any idea where I can find the 8.7ins that you refer to? Has the information perhaps been updated since you saw it? Or am I just missing something?

Finally, and unfortunately, no matter how we agree to resolve this, at the moment it's impossible for us to unvoid a question, as much as we'd like to. We can unsettle but not unvoid currently. I'm looking into whether we can change that.

I hope this has helped, Truthwrangler, and apologies again.
